I have a '98 SXi Pro and for some reason the thing stop working. Been
trying to diagnose the problem without any luck. Here's where I stand:

When I hit the start button, I get absolutely nothing. No click, no
cranking, nothing. If I run jumper cables to the starter directly, it
cranks. If I bridge the starter relay with a screwdriver, it also cranks.
I've tried swapping batteries, hooking it to the car, etc., nothing works
when power is supplied from the battery cable terminals.

So, could it be a problem with the start/stop switch itself? Is there any
fuse to look for? I removed the small black cap that says "fuse" on the CDI
box, and there is a red wire that has a connector splicing the wire, but no
fuse assembly in between. There is also a fuse in a small plastic wrapper
attached to this same wire. It's odd because it doesn't appear as though
there is anyplace to use the fuse. Only other thoughts are the CDI? the
battery cables themselves?

Any help would be appreciated. Anxious to get the ski working again.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,
With an ohmmeter, check the big positive cable from the solenoid to the
starter and the start/stop and lanyard switch wires for resistance. If these
test ok, it is probably a bad solenoid, replace it. At any rate, the
electrical box will have to be removed and opened to access the switch
connections. You will then see the fuse holder, when re-assembling the
elect. box place the fuse holder just behind the cap.

I had a 1998 SXI Pro and the same thing happened to me. It was driving me
crazy until I finally traced it to the start/stop cable. Use an ohm meter at
the connector end and press the start/stop and see if you have continuity.
Mine was difficult because it was intermittent. The actual problem was not
the switch but the wire had a little slice in it deep within the handle pole
and the salt water eventually corroded it to the point it would not make
electrical contact or at least intermittent contact. The sad part is the
start/stop switch is part of the cable, it's sealed and cost about $100.00
plus. With a little solder, heatshrink and RTV you can repair it yourself.
You just have to fish the cable through the handlepole. Troubleshoot with an
ohm meter first. I think Kawasaki damaged the cable during assembly!!!!

Rob,

follow the gray sheathed start switch wires coming from the handle pole
to the right side of the electrical box. There is a connector there that
is susceptible to water intrusion. Sometimes a simple disconnect and
reconnect will fix the problem.
