Are those new shorter, wider slalom skis easier to get up on and can
they carve like the standard skis?
I'm not looking to be a competition skier, just a rec slalom skier that
looks good! And I don't want to fork out alot of cash
for some exotic Obrien or Connelly competition ski.
Any suggestions?

I'd start with an inexpensive "beginners" regular ski (one from
a combo set will do fine). Should be reasonably wide and flat bottom.
If you cant get going on that then look at the fat skis.
There are a couple of hardcore guys who are there just about every day all year
round.
There is also a guy on an airchair from time to time....
