Maybe you mixed upyour wires and put a on switch thingy for the tach
by pushing the trim button. I know I have a negative battery wire just
for the trim. What mods did you do BTW? I have a R&D Ride plate and
grate, TDR waterbox, and a Nujet impeller.

Check for 12v to red/white wire going in to the trim box. OK here then check
for 12v at the orange wire coming out of the trim box with the motor running.
Also check the black wire here for continuity to ground.

Remove the black screw cover on the electrical box and check the fuses.
It's always best to start with the basic power supply. He was in the
electrical box and the 10amp fuse for the guages is there as well. The
circuit also goes thru the keyed switch and to the gauges. It's just a
starting point. Who knows what is wrong, but many times the simplest
thing is missed.
He mentioned that the gauges work after he uses the trim. The trim has
it's own 30amp fuse in the box as well. However, there is the
possibility that he is powering up the gauges thru a voltage feedback
from the trim motor circuit. (there are some common wiring between the
trim harness and gauge harness)

Mark,
Found something interesting in the X*2.....the starter relay wasn't
bad, it was a 5A heavy-duty fuse that was NOT blown but didn't pass
the continuity test.....we suspect the inside link separated from the
end cap. We didn't try playing with it, but I wonder if it could have
gone intermittent with a loose end cap.
