LAUNCHING THE SEASON
IN STYLE AT LAKE WEBB
Story by Staff
Photos by Peralta Design
Bakersfield, CA - Lake Webb, January 29, 2000 - The BPMS racing season
got underway this past weekend with the first of twenty-four personal
watercraft events in the schedule, and you could have not asked for
better weather and water conditions. It was a bit cold, but in 1999,
there was still snow in the ground. Not this year. Temperatures in 1999
hovered around 40-plus. This weekend they were around 67 degrees. Wind
was nonexistent, and traffic on the lake was not a problem. As we say,
"you could not have not asked for better...conditions."
One drawback was the early morning fog, which delayed the start by
almost an hour. Originally scheduled to start with the first Moto at 9
a.m., it was not until about 9:50 a.m., that the combined Veteran and
Master Class got underway for their 90-minute jaunt around the 1.6-mile
race course. Tracy Malan (Kawasaki) set the pace and he was never
caught. He set 43 laps (fastest of the day) and was one of only two
other racers to finish with as many and win the overall and Master Class
title. Second overall and second Master was Jeff Bukamier (SeaDoo); and
he was followed by another Kawasaki mounted rider, Jeff Jackson. Jeff
was not supposed to even race because just two weeks earlier he had been
in the hospital with an emergency appendectomy operation. So much for a
six-week recuperation time. First Vet went to Randy Fondse (Yamaha), who
also finished 5th overall.
Next event was the 10-minute Moto #1 for all Stand-ups. Chris Lawrence
(Kaw), IJSBA Expert World Champion, set the pace and never looked back.
Jim MacKey (Yam) was second and Scott Anger (Yam) placed third. It was a
long course for the Stand-ups and they all got together and asked that
the race course be shortened for Moto #2. Not a problem.
The third event was for all "785" Class entries, Amateur Women and the
new BONE STOCK Class. Leading the way, also the IJSBA's National
Champion, was Katie Jenkins (Kaw), who had just finished in the stand-up
race and was pulling double duty (actually triple-duty. More on this
later.). Katie worked her way through the pack and then pulled off the
Overall win with 41 laps in 90-minutes. Second overall and first in the
Nov 785 Class was Daniel Tyrrell (SeaDoo); and he was followed by Jamie
Lopez (Yamaha) in third overall and first in the Expert 785 Class.
Placing a very respectable 7th overall and first in the Beginner Bone
Stock Class was Shawn Hudson (SeaDoo GTX).
The fourth event had Moto #2 for the Stand-ups. Chris Lawrence took off
just as he had on the first Moto and looked to be invincible. However,
after only four laps in this shorter SKI race course, his Kawasaki Super
Jet was dead in the water and could not restart it. This left the door
wide open for Katie Jenkins, who was riding here third straight race, to
take the Moto #2 win, followed by Scott Anger and Jim MacKey. However,
by virtue of the two-moto finishes, the Overall went to Scott Anger
(Yamaha), followed by Jim MacKey, and Katie Jenkins, in that order.
The final event of the day was also the largest entry wise, with 23
riders in the Open Classes (Pro, Expert and Novice.) Chris Lawrence
(Kawasaki) once again showed that he was going to set the pace and as
such, he managed to get the hole shot and stretch his lead to the point
that everyone was contending for second place. But as it often happens,
90-minutes is not a dash in closed-course. Endurance from the racer and
his/her equipment is a must. While Chris could have gone on to win
without even working up a sweat, his Kawasaki gave up on lap 31 with
what appeared to be a seized-up engine. The battle for the lead was
between David Suesov (Yamaha), Kurt Knollenberg (SeaDoo), and Kenny
Ritchie (SeaDoo). The one who had the best shot was Suesov, and got
close to winning it, but in the end it was Kurt Knollenberg who set 41
laps after the 90-minutes to take the Overall and Pro Class win. Top
Expert and second overall went to David Suesov, followed by Kenny
Ritchie as third overall and second in the Expert Open Class. Vernard
Marshall (SeaDoo) grabbed the Novice Open Class win and finished 7th
overall.
Congratulations to ALL the racers, who not only had a great time, put
on a great show, and according to Red Longacre, our Technical and
Refueling Director, there wasn't one single fuel penalty all day. A feat
that we all like to duplicate at every race.
The new BPMS crystal medallions for 2000, were given out about an hour
after all the racing was done, and most got back on the freeway to head
home. The Superbowl was their next objective. How about them Rams?
The next LongCourse is scheduled for March 18, back at Buena Vista
Aquatic Recreational Park, at the smaller, but just as much fun, Lake
Evans. The next BPMS event is the first Gran Prix and Team Endurance at
Crazy Horse Campgrounds, Havasu, AZ, February 26, 2000. Once again, the
newly established Beginner and Open BONE STOCK Class will make its debut
at these two events.
See you then!
