What a coincidence. I actually asked this as a trivia question about 2 weeks
ago. Well, the answer is:
The most goals in one game was SEVEN, scored by Joe Malone of the Quebec
Bulldogs. The Bulldogs beat Toronto 10-6 on Jan. 31st, 1920, and the red-faced
goalie was Ivan Mitchell.
Something of interest to note: only 21 days earlier, Mitchell
had given up FOURTEEN goals in a game to Montreal, in which Newsy Lalonde
scored SIX himself, final score being 14-7. According to the retired goalie's
index, Mitchell only played 21 games in 3 seasons for Toronto. I guess know
we know why. So much for pathos.
For the curious, the other Six-Goal-In-A-Game Scorers were Joe Malone, Corb
Denneny, Cy Denneny, Syd Howe, Red Berenson, and Daryl Sittler. Sittler's
feat in 1976 was the last time anyone's scored six.

Gary
I read from a newspaper years ago that Lemieux had score 5 goals against
New Jersey in 1988. Those 5 goal were all of different types.
An even strength goal, a power play goal, a short-handed goal,
a penalty shot and an empty-net goal. All possible types of goals
had been scored by Mario in one game. Since I forgot the source of this news
and I did not watch hockey until 1989, would someone confirm about this?
John
You are right, John. I read about this news from the Hockey stamp parkage
which issued last October since I also di not wtch hockey since 1990.
