What do you NHL-fans think about changing NHL rink sizes closer
to international ??

As far as I know, almost every rink in the NHL is close to
200 feet by 85 feet. On the other hand, the usual international
rink size is 200 feet by 98 feet.

Do you think these claims are true ?

- a wider rink would reduce "lucky" goals, which usually
happen because of that big hustle in front of goalie

- a wider rink would make the game less physical. Players
like Gretzky and Yzerman would rule the ice (don't they
do that already ??) and less fights would occur

- At least a third of the defencemen now in the league would
be replaced by better skaters. (sorry Manson !)

The reasons you have listed are some of the reasons why the NHL officials
many fans in North America DON'T want to increase the rink size. There are
several other reasons. For example:

- The larger rink would favor teamwork, spectacular passing
and attacking at the expense of the good old "dump it and
chase it" tactic. This would demand much more thinking from
players and especially coaches. Can you teach an old dog
new tricks?

On a more serious side. Does any body know if the NHL would object if any
of the teams built a larger rink? Are there any regulations on the subject?
