However here are my thoughts.
Create a smaller rectangular area just in front of the net where
-only- the defending team's players are allowed to reside at any
given time. Make it as wide as the net and say 50-100 cm deep.
If the puck is already inside, the attacking team could be allowed
to put their sticks in there to play the puck if it's loose.
Then create another rectangular area that is larger (but including)
the smaller area. let's say about totally 100-200 cm wider than the
net and say 300-500 cm deep. This is free territory for anyone to
dwell in BUT the goalie must have at least part of his body (or
equipment) inside it to be allowed to hold on to the puck.

It's not the rule that's bad, it's the size of the crease and the time it
takes to make the determination. Surely there is some quick electronic
method of determining crease infringement.

Sounds like the soccer crease... I wonder if soccer fans bitch about
their crease rule?

Actually it's more like the Floorball crease rule.
And no... soccer fans do not bitch about their crease rule... as a
matter of fact I've never heard anyone complain about the soccer crease
rule... The rule soccer fans might argue about is the offside rule, I
guess.

I guess this is just generally speaking from you and that it isn't
directed at me.
I've never "bitched" about the NHL hockey crease rule.
I just brought forward a (constructive?) suggestion.
