What a crock. American kids aren't going to get those hockey scholarships.
For one thing athletic scholarships are only available in Div I and Div II
according to NCAA rules.
Second there are only 50 Div I schools with hockey in the first place.
Third each school is only allowed 22 scholarships for men's hockey. This
compares to 75 for football and around 25 for basketball. Therefore,
there are lots of full ride players in FB and BB who don't even suit up.
In hockey a team may carry 25 or 26 players total and they are allowed to
dress 18 skaters and at least 2 goalies. Virtually everyone who suits up
will play at least somewhat.
Finally, over 75% of hockey scholarships go to Canadian kids. I'm not knocking
Canadian kids; they are fine players and need the money to get out of
Manitoba more than American kids where hockey is a rich kid's sport.
This leads to the following:
50 teams times 22 players divided by 4 years times 25% equals 68.75
jobs per year for American kids in US Div I hockey. USA Hockey has
100's of thousands of kids registered.
