OK...here's a one.
I don't get to see a great lot of hockey, living as I do in Cleve-
land, but I am a huge fan. I picked up the new copy of Strat-O-
Matic hockey (GREAT GAME), but note that they've changed the
penalty rules to include misconducts, 4 minutes, bench penalties,
etc.

Here's my question: what happens during penalties that aren't
two-minute minors? In the following situations, for example,
are they you-get-X-minutes-to-score-as-many-as-you-can penalties,
one-goal-and-the-guy-is-out penalties, or offender-gets-tossed
out penalties?

- 4 minutes/double minor
- coincidental double minors
- 5 minute major
- 10 minute misconduct or double major (is there
such a thing?)

Replies by email would be SERIOUSLY appreciated. Ta. :)

Just two penalties back to back. The opposing team can only score one
goal in each penalty, at which time that penalty is over.

Since neither team is short handed goals don't effect penalty

The other team can score as many goals as it can. Penalty is for the full
five minutes.

-10 minute misconduct -- the penalized player sits in the box for 10 minutes,
but the team is NOT short handed.

-double major -- "I" never heard of one, but I guess it could happen. In that
case it's two back to back 5 minute majors and the other team can score as
many goals as possible in that 10 minutes, you stay in the box.

I've never seen such a complete diagnosis of NHL rules. Great job! But What
happens if the goalie skates past the red line and gets called for
cross-checking /boarding and draws blood.

He gets the penalty for crossing the line, and add to that, the
initial penalties incurred... Goalies can get game misconducts, so an
intentional high stick or an instigator for example can get him tossed
from the game...

It is true, Goalies can get misconducts. You are right, I
remeber a few years back in fact when the Hawks played the
Northstars on Halloween night, and Belfour was ejected for
jumping in.

I think I remember a fight taking place a few years ago when Sean Burke was
still with the Devils (I think it was him). The two goalies met at center ice
and started going at it. I don't remember the details, but it sure was a
sight!

I don't know if we thinking of the same thing, but a couple of
years ago the Flyers and Whalers got into a big brawl at the end and
Burke and Dominic Roussel tried to fight. It was pretty ugly, especially
for "Roo". Glad we have Hextall, though. I think he could hold his own is
a fight (at least against the other goalies)

Just for an additional .02, The Blues Curtis Joseph was involved in a brawl
with Detroit goaltender Tim Cheveldae a couple years back. It was a fight
between both teams. Chevy came out to pull off a Blues player from some
wimpy Redwing's back. Cujo skated out pull Tim away and soon the local
TV stations had great intro material for the next five years.

Neither player was ejected, though each received 2 minute penalties.
What a joke. Great fight though, CUJO won in 2 rounds.

EVEN BETTER:

A ferw years ago, the Habs and the Nordiques got into a bench clearing
brawl and the two BACKUP golies went at it at centre ice (I think it
was Sevigny for the habs)....

And not to forget the wonderful world championships when Canada/Russia
went at it (and I do believe Burke was the goalie on that team as
well....)

How about last year's game on President's Day afternoon. I had
third row seats for the Flyer's-Habs free-for-all. The brawl was in
front of Roy after Brind'Amour scored. Roy took a swipe at Brindy,
Lindros took a couple at Roy, then proceeded to destroy Eric Dejardins.
Rousell took off like a bat out of hell to join the fray, and was
rewarded with 2 for leaving the crease and 2 for cross-checking Roy
(which never happened). All in all, Roo at the least, has taken a more
aggressive approach with his game, and Hexy can only help!

Just this year, a couple of games back against the Oilers, Eddie Belfour was
given a 5 minute major penalty.

How about the fight between Joseph and Cheveldea when the latter was with
Detroit? Chevy left the crease during an altercation and Joseph followed
suit. They met at center ice and mostly wrestled, but Joseph landed one
or two. I expected both goalies to be thrown out, but the ref felt generous
and only gave them roughing minors (in addition to minors for leaving the
crease during an altercation). It was a good thing for the Blues, too,
because Detroit's backup (I believe) was Riendeau and the Blues had a pylon
backing up Joseph. (That gives Detroit the advantage: Riendeau was the
equivilent of a pylon with random flopping ;-)). Anyway, they still show
1 or 2 seconds of that fight when promoting Blues games in St. Louis.

Just a couple of comments about that Joseph/Cheveldae fight: you say that
they mostly wrestled and Joseph landed one or two, but I remember the
fight distinctly and am positive that CuJo indeed landed a good 5 or 6
punches. He basically made Cheveldae's face into a punching bag. In
fact, they showed Cheveldae after the game and he had a black eye.

Also, you said that Joseph's backup was a 'pylon', but who was it? Was
it not Guy Hebert? Or was it before he became CuJo's backup? I don't
remember.

I remember one time last year when Dallas was squared up against Hartford. I don't remember exactly how or why but a fight broke out and Sean Burke ended up in Andy Moog's face. Bit of mismatch, wouldn't ya say?! Burke wanted to go at it, but Moog wanted no part of it...I don't blame 'im. Burke would've turned Andy into the first human Zamboni!

I remember another fight where Shaun Burke (then of New Jersey) took on
the Leafs Mark Laforest. It was one of the best fights I have ever
seen! There was a brawl, and all of a sudden the two goalies started
eyeing each other. The linesman were occupied with the rest of the
players, and suddenly the goalies started going at it at Centre ice.
This game was on TSN, and to this day, I regret not having taped it.

Does anyone know of any other goalies who have been invloved in two or more?

That is not always the case. I was watching highlights from a
game played a couple weeks back. The goalie(whose name escapes me)
pounded the s*!# out of some player who was leaving because of an
ejection. It was the Flyers goalie, and the other player must have
thought the same thing Jeff thought.
He won't make that mistake again!
