sorry to rain on your parade but if the wings can limp past the stars the
fliers will stomp on them in the finals. the new rules about the offensive
zone obliterate everything that the wings have ever accomplished defensivly.
bowman cant adjust his system to it and the wings dont have time to master a
new one not this year.

The Wings are essentially the same team that has already won two Cups,
they still have Vladdy as an inspiration, and they've added Uwe Krupp.
Looks like a recipe for a three-peat to me.
Ian Merrithew - UNB Fredericton
The second best team is Dallas, but I still think they are one center
short of pulling even with the Wings. Dallas has no one with the speed
to match up with Federov; if Dallas could get a fast, playmaking center,
then they'd have a shot at it.
Scoring is down due to more than the defensive systems. Expansion has
diluted the talent pool and there just aren't enough scorers out there.
This gave the Wings a big advantage in the play-offs - they had like 15
guys who could score on any night.
The Wings also have a big advantage in coaching. I don't think the
Wings would have won any Cups if it hadn't been for Bowman shaking up
the team. He changed Yzerman's game, got the team to play defense, and
covered for weak goaltending. He also knows how to create dynasties.
All the teams in the East have major weaknesses, so the challenge will
come from within the division. Detroit is the best team in hockey - but
not by much.

I am so sick of this argument. If expansion has diluted the scoring
pool, why hasn't it diluted the goaltending pool to match?
See ya.

So now 3 men back on defense is just going to die because the blue line is
moved? That is all the left wing lock is, 3 man defense 2 forecheckers. How can
any team match up against the Wings line for line. Our 3rd and 4th lines would
be the 1st or 2nd line on any other team in the NHL.

If the NHL were only Detriot and Nashville, this statement might would be
true. Include any of the other 25 NHL teams in your little league and
your statement becomes hyperbolized fanaticism (if that is not redundant
in and of itself).
"I would say that the Wings have to be the favorites going into this
year. However, one injury to a key player (Yzerman, Federov, Lidstrom)
and all bets are off."
------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn't pull my money off the table that quickly. This is exactly
what happened last year. Brendan Shanahan had a bad back for the last
two rounds of the playoffs and didn't contribute much and we still won.
The Red Wing have the depth to deal with a few injuries. Look how good
they did without Fedorov for most of the year.
The Dallas Stars were almost a joke offensively when Joe Nieuwendyk
went down. The only reason they lasted as long as they did was because
of their good defence. But you have to score goals to win the cup.
Sam. (MH, MI) GO WINGS!
- I would say the goaltending talent is diluted. On the top of the
scale, you have Brodeur and Hasek, but that's about it. You had a few
goaltenders get hot in the play-offs, but they don't have consistency.
Roy is in decline, Belfour is a regular season goalie, and former
winners of Cups like Vernon and Fuhr are not A players, anymore. Which
goalie raised the Cup - Osgood, who is arguably among the worst
goaltenders ever to win a Cup (along with Barasso).
- The regular season didn't mean that much, which was why the Wings
could coat by without Federov. But if Federov wasn't there for the post
season, they could have gone out in the first round against Phoenix;
Sergei earned his $15M in that series. Contrary to Cherry, I didn't
think Shanahan was a critical player; I'm referring more to the troika
of Stevie Y, Federov, and Lidstrom. They could afford to lose Osgood,
Brown, etc, and win, but if one of the major horses goes, the talent gap
quickly closes.

That's what's great about hockey...anything can happen. But the
depth...Wings again in my book! Hull the underachiever can't pull the
Stars, they'll be a distant twinkle come next June.
And an injury to one player? Federov was out most of last season with
a swollen ego and they still got it done. The Wings are so complete
one or two players out will not spell disaster.
Oh, puhlease! Another deluded Flyers fan. Yeah, they sure have shown
they have the right stuff (coaching, chemistry, goaltending, defensive
prowess) to win it all, haven't they???
Bowman has made a life of making fools out of people who make statements
like that. You never know what someone can adjust to until they try and
fail. My money is on Bowman and the Red Wings to be a big factor
through
the Cup Finals!
Amen brother. Regardless of what system is used, the Wings STILL are the
deepest bench in the game. Hands down. And the talent at the top is
world-class.
Bringing Doug Brown back was a big move. So was re-signing Sergei. Hats
off to Detroit management.
The biggest question mark for Detroit is--will Scotty be back? Some
would say it is goal tending, but Osgood proved that he is MORE than
capable last year, and I have every confidence that he will only get
better this year.
This off-season has been a tough one for Bowman: knee surgery,
angioplasty, and family loss. I hear that he's going to make the final
decision soon, and that he's awaiting word from his doctors before
making up his mind. (Which is the greatest mind in hockey, BTW...)
PLEASE Scotty; we NEED you!
