I just read about the Russia vs USA game..... sounds like it would have been
a really fun game to have watched in person........
And now the investigation begins on whether Sweden deliberately
tanked their game against the Slovaks. That's not my opinion,
it's something already being looked at by the IOC.
If the Swedes had won, they might have faced Canada and Russia
would then play Switzerland; instead, the Swedes will play the
Swiss who had already clinched second place in group A when the
SWE v. SLO game started.
I can think of four possible scenarios for the IOC and IIHF:
1) Do nothing and play the quarterfinals as they stand.
2) Disqualify Sweden, but that would mean Switzerland would have
no quarterfinal opponent. So, they could bump the USA to third
and give Finland a medal round bye or promote Kazakhstan to
fourth to play the Finns.
3) Penalize Sweden points and move them to fourth, promoting the
USA to third against Switzerland, and the Swedes would play
the Finns.
4) ADD points to Sweden's total and promote them to second where
they will play Canada and the Russians play the Swiss.
There could be other possibilities I haven't thought of. Only
the fourth is unlikely to happen, IMHO.
