can somebody tell me when the Devils acquired Holik what else did they acquire
with him. Was it a 1st round draft choice or a 2nd. Thank you.

Holik was not acquired by the Devils through a draft. He was traded
from the Hartford Whalers over the summer. He was drafted first round
by the Whalers in 1989, and was the 10th pick overall. He is 6'3"
210lbs, born in Dukla Jihlava, Czechoslovakia. Incidentally, he was
born on Jan 1, 1971...a New Years' baby.

Holik was traded to the Devils for Sean Burke (remember him, he refused to play for
the Devils and it took over a year to unload him) and Eric Weinrich. The Devils
were BIG winners in that deal, IMHO.

I wouldn't say that the Devils won big in the Holik deal. Holik was
playing pitifully in Hartford. He was on a checking line, and he
couldn't do the job. Hartford really needed a goalie...with all due
respects to Ottowa fans, El Sid sucks. He always did. He always will.
Sure every now and then, he displays a flash of brilliance, but his
incompetance more than makes up for it.

Anyway, I really think that Holik was just another story of a guy who
wasn't in tune with his surroundings. And when he went to NJ, he was
free to play the game the way he knew he could.

I still say the Devs got the best deal. Burke had 10 good games in a row and an
exceptional playoffs after joining the team after the '88 Olympics. After that, it
was all down hill. Whether it was his own fault or just that the team couldn't play
defense in front of him doesn't matter. The point is, he did nothing for the team.
Weinrich, although a good defenseman, is just another name on the Devils deep D roster.
Holik, at 21, is superstar potential, IMHO. I think the Devils got a great deal.
