Sam Donaldson and John Davidson are the two best I have ever heard.
They are on MSG and broadcast for the NY Rangers.
JD has been on other networks during the playoffs.

Does anyone know who the announcer will be for the games broadcast on FOX?

Mike Emrick and John Davidson are the top pair. Others will do
regional alternative games. Mike Emrick is THE best announcer in
hockey at this point in time.

As a displaced Penguins fan, I remain partial to the announcing of Mike
Lang. The day they decided to use him on KBL instead of the radio
network was one of my dark days (I lived too far from Pittsburgh at the
time to get the Pens on cable, but could get the radio play-by-play). I
think his style was best suited for radio. Nevertheless, Lange made the
Pens sound exciting even in the BM years (before Mario).

I watched the Sharks and the Ducks on ESPN2 on Thursday, March 23. Who
was the awful play-by-play guy? He didn't even have a sense of humor and
I'm sorry to always forget the regular commentary guy, I think he's
fabulous but always forget his name.

But this substitute play-by-play guy was awful. he should be in baseball.

I kind of like Paul Romaniuk for TSN, but absolutely hate Bob McKenzie.
Romaniuk makes it interesting but McKenzie is just a pain in the ass,
with his 'know it all' attitude.

I agree with the comment about McKenzie, but Paul Romaniuk making it
interesting? He almost makes the excitement seem like an afterthought.
Case in point, Canada's win at the World Championships; it was like "and
Canada wins". That was it. No excitement. Mind you, I wasn't expecting
something like the emotion of Paul Henderson's goal against the Russians or
Kirk Gibson's home run in the World Series, but he probably gets just as
excited going for a root canal.

I think the best hockey announcer was (for those of you that
remember) Dan Kelly, who called the games for St. Louis and
some Nationally broadcasted games in the 60's and 70's.

The Worst absolutely HAS to be Ron Webber for the Caps. He gets totally
lost in plays, forgets peoples numbers, and seems to get excited over the
lamest things. I swear he is drunk in the booth. He reminds me of the
announcer from Slap Shot.

I'd have to say Pat Foley who I believe does radio-TV simulcasts for
Blackhawks games. Dale Tallon (sp?), Foley's sidekick, does OK color too.
Maybe Andres Cantor from Univision should call hockey games and do his
screaming GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLL! routine like he did during last
year's World Cup soccer tournament!

I prefer Dave Strader who does the Red Wings and did last weeks Blackhawk
game on Fox. He not all that animated, but he's gets the names right and
can keep up with the play which most of the announcers don't. He usually
avoids the homerism of many announcers, which I like. Just because
Detroit is the home team doesn't mean they're always doing things right
or deserve the calls and he admits that openly

My votes are for Jim Lorentz and John Gurtler, TV announcers for the
Sabres. What a couple of deadbeats. Gurtler knows nothing about the
game and Lorentz annoys the fans with phrases like "Did you see that
spinorama move?" "I've seen more meat on a butcher's apron!"
There are many a fan who turn the volume down on their TV's and
turn to WGR 55 to hear Rick Gennearret's broadcast. Thank goodness
for him!! He coined the "La la la la la la la LaFontaine!!!" us
Buffalo fans know and love.

I would think viewers of CBC's Hockey Night in Canada in the '60,
'70's and part of the '80's would vote for Danny Gallivan, without
question the best.

I think that Jim Robson, the former voice of the Vancouver Canucks is the BEST.
He now only does the occasional TV game but he is great. By the way he is in the hockey
hall of fame. He also "avoids the homerism of many annoucers". You have to listen to him
to appreciate how good he is.

I'd have to agree that Emrick is one of the better announcers out
there, however, I still have to cast my vote for Pat Foley. He
is exciting to listen to, knows the players, and is "relatively"
fair (e.g., if the Hawks are playing well, he'll let you know,
and if the Hawks are stinking up the joint, he'll be the first to
let them have it.) Now I may catch some grief on the last point,
but NO announcer who is payed by a team is completely
"homerless", especially when they see their team day in and day
out. Just one man's opinion.

Alright a guy with some sense of Broadcasting. Bob Cole is awesome.
For someone who hopes to continue his tradition in a few years, I
would like to say first, there was a story done that I would like to
take a few quotes from:

"I've been lucky," said Cole. "I've tried to stay away from
favouratism and to treat the game objectively. Most importantly, I've
never lost the sense of excitement. Every night when I go up to the
booth, even in the playoffs when we're doing them every other night, I
still get the gitters."

Anyone who has done hockey the way he has done hockey and for as long
as he has done it, must really appreciate the sport and that is the
most important thing.

"If I can enhance a game by making it easier for people to follow it
and keep a flow, then I feel I've done my job."

And he has...

Bob Cole is such a dynamic broadcaster, and Hockey Night in Canada
producer Mark Askin knows just how dynamic he really is.

"He is a big-time star right now and he is the dean of hockey broadcasters."

I agree.

Hi there:
I just wanted to say that Jim Robson HAS to be considered
the top broadcaster in the game of hockey. Unfortuantly he
retired from radio this year, but it is a pleasure to listen to
him on the occasional television game that he does in Vancouver.
Until this year he was the voice of the Canucks since the start
of the franchise and 2 years (?not sure) ago he was inducted into the
hockey Hall of fame; that's not something that too many broadcasters can
say. In fact it's is unbelievable! :)

If you ever get the chance to listen to a game that Jim Robson
has 'called' then you will get a total 'feel' for that game. He
brings SO much into the game. His knowledge, and ability to really
let you know what is happening in the game is very rare to find in a
play-by-play man, even the best of them!
