How can St. Louis have $1.5 million per season available for
Petr Nedved and not have $3 million available for Curtis Joseph?

Didn't they notice what they were doing to NHL salary scales,
and calculate what they would need to set aside for Joseph?

Maybe the Blues are hitting the wall sooner than expected.
The team that will throw millions at almost any free agent,
without regards to competence, don't seem to have the money
to sign one of their core players...what gives?

Yeah I agree with you, St Louis Blues salary scale is really screwed up.
They can afford to play players like Nedved, Statsny, rather
unjustifiable sums of money, but then can't afford to pay their core
players the money they want. The Blues would be nowhere if not for their
goaltending. But they've added some high priced talent to their team so
it will be interesting if they manage to go further in the playoffs or
finish higher than 4th in their division. I'll bet that St Louis is the
team with the most # of over $1 million players.

The Blues will sign Joseph. The Blues coudln't afford the PR nightmare
if they don't.

I'm not so sure about that anymore. I've heard lately that the Blues
have acquired/signed Jon Casey, but I must have missed that during the
offseason, I thought he was still in Dallas. Considering they have Casey
on the team, I think they can legitimately say to Joseph, we're not going
to pay you as much because we have Casey as insurance in case you don't sign.

The Blues acquired Casey as a backup for Joseph, since Hrivnak proved
that he could not fulfill this spot last season. What if Joseph would
have been injured last year for a significant amount of time? Would the
Blues have made the playoffs with Hrivnak in goal? I doubt it. The
simple fact is that most of the Blues' front office personnel owe their
jobs to Cujo. Without him the last few seasons, the Blues would have
missed the playoffs for sure 2 seasons ago and likely more than once.
When Joseph signs, it will be a multi-million dollar deal and Caron
wants Keenan to handle this contract. Finally, Cujo is arguably the most
popular player among the fans on the team(yes, I believe he
is more popular than Brett Hull or Brendan Shanahan). He received the
loudest applause at Shanahan's charity softball game a few weeks ago.
It will be a PR nightmare if the Blues would trade him.

Considering Casey pretty much sh*t his pants every time someone broke in
alone on him last year with the Bruins, then whined about how he missed home
and how the fans didn't like him, I would think that Joseph would be about
ready to cash in big-time.

Casey???? Wasn't he the guy who took two strikes then missed the 3rd pitch?

Minor technicality there. We all know that Dallas Stars used to be in
Minnesota. Sometimes its just a little harder to used to saying Dallas
Stars instead of Minnesota North Stars. Besides, they've only been in
Dallas one year so far, we're still in an adjustment time period. :)
