Item of note:
In the 3/28/60 edition of the Winnipeg Free Press, a CP (Canadian Press) article mentioned the fact that the CBC fielded numerous angry calls from viewers upset that CBC continued to televise all three overtimes of the 3/27 Leafs-Wings game. They missed several previously scheduled shows as the OT continued on. The CBC said that the policy of telecasting each Stanley Cup game to its conclusion would be enforced.

These are the crews for the 1961 Stanley Cup playoffs as seen on Canadian television sets. Even with two U.S. based teams in the Final, there was no American network coverage.

4/1 AND 4/3 at Chi started at 830ET; were they really JIP and at what time

Per the 3/31 Winnipeg Free Press, the Winnipeg CBC outlet carried the 4/1 MTL-CHI game at 8:30 Central (9:30 Eastern). They showed the Ed Sullivan Show at 7:00 (8:00 Eastern) which included guest stars Canadian comedians Wayne & Shuster, frequent guests of the Sullivan shoe. A program called "Close-Up" was on at 8:00 (9:00 Eastern) and then followed the Habs-Hawks in progress.

On 4/3, CBC Winnipeg carried the TOR-NY game, but I would have to think the MTL-CHI game was carried starting at 9:30 Eastern by CBC, joined in progress in the same way as 4/1. CBC affiliates in and neat Toronto (per the Toronto Star) showed the Garry Moore show at 8 PM and then picking up the TOR-NY game at 9 PM.

Welcome to 1966. A couple of watershed items for this season.

For the first time, there would be National U.S. coverage of the Stanley Cup playoffs, including the first network telecasts on either side of the border as NBC would televise in color games two and five of the DET-CHI series and games one and four of the Final.

As always, please let me know if you spot errors or omissions.

Note:
To accomodate American TV coverage, Game 1 of the Final was shifted to a Sunday afternoon. It was the first time ever that a hockey game was played on a Sunday afternoon in Montreal. This created a bit of controversy in Montreal, a heavily Roman Catholic city, especially among the religious leaders. While games 1 and 4 were televised in color in the U.S., CBC carried these games and all other games in black & white.

Notes:
With the exception of the 4/9 TOR-CHI game, all of the games were televised in color.

There is a possiblity that the 4/11 MTL-NY game was not televised due to the AFTRA strike in the U.S. Confirmation one way or the other on this would be appreciated.

Note:
CBS was scheduled to televise the 4/8 NY-MTL game. However the AFTRA strike forced cancellation of the telecast.

It's 1968 and the first season of the Great Expansion, when the NHL doubled in size from 6 to 12 teams.

It's also the first season that all HNIC games (regular season and playoffs) were televised in color.

Stateside, this was also the first season that featured a full slate of regular season and playoff games.

Quote from Bearfan on 05/26/09 at 21:11:05:
The 1971 Finals between Montreal and Chicago were on in prime time on, I think, NBC.

it was CBS; they did a game every sunday afternoon, then added a prime time telecast of game 7 from Chicago tuesday may 18; the following year they did the same, adding a thursday may 11 prime time telecast of the Bruins winning the Cup at Madison Square Garden

these were the first Stanley Cup playoff prime time national telecasts in the US

Welcome to 1966. A couple of watershed items for this season.

For the first time ever, there was National U.S. coverage of the Stanley Cup playoffs, including the first network telecasts on either side of the border as NBC would televise in color games two and five of the DET-CHI series and games one and four of the Final.

As always, please let me know if you spot errors or omissions.

Note:
To accommodate American TV coverage, Game 1 of the Final was shifted to a Sunday afternoon.
Except for the 4/9 TOR-CHI game 2, all games were televised in color. There is a possibility that the 4/11 MTL-NY game was not televised due to the AFTRA strike in the U.S. Confirmation one way or the other on this would be appreciated.

Quote from Bearfan on 05/26/09 at 21:11:05:
The 1971 Finals between Montreal and Chicago were on in prime time on, I think, NBC.

it was CBS; they did a game every Sunday afternoon, then added a prime time telecast of game 7 from Chicago on Tuesday, May 18; the following year they did the same, adding a Thursday, May 11 prime time telecast of the Bruins winning the Cup at Madison Square Garden. These were the first Stanley Cup playoff prime time national telecasts in the U.S.
