On January 11, 1976, the defending Stanley Cup champion Flyers took on met
the Soviet Red Army Team, which had been supplemented with additional
players from the Soviet Elite League. The Soviets had been awesome on the
tour, losing no games and with only one tie. The pride of the NHL was in
the hands of the often hated "Broad Street Bullies." Things looked grim
since Vezina caliber goalie Bernie Parent was out with an injury.
The Flyers won the game behind a simple 1 forchecker with a 4 man wall
startegy. This utilized players like Booby Clarke, and frustrated the
Soviets, who preferred skating to "dump and chase" hockey.
The most memorable part of the game came in the second periond when a
penalty to Flyers defenseman Ed Van Impe had just ended. Van Impe came out
of the box and headed directly for the Flyers defensive zone. A Soviet
player was there and Van Impe timed it so that he arrived just in time to
hit the player with a brutal check. The player feel to the ice but no
penalty was called, and the Soviets left the ice in protest. The Spectrum
was roaring a few minutes late when the announcement came that the Soviets
would be penalized for delay of the game. After the league threatened to
not pay the Soviets for the tour, the game resumed.
The final score was 4 to 1, as the defense for the Flyers came up big and
wayne Stevenson was great in goal. Larry "Izzy" Goodenough scored one
goal. One of the Watson brothers added another. I believe that the others
were scored by Leach and MacLeish, but I may be wrong.
At the end of the game, a proud banner proclaimed the feelings of the
Philadelphia fans -- "Bring on Mars!" The Flyers were undisputed world
champions.
