At the end of last night's game between Canucks and the Kings, Bruce McNall
responded to a question regarding "no first round draft picks for L.A. until
1994" by saying that the Kings have never done well with their first round
picks anyway, and that they have done much better with later rounds. He also
said that he is willing to trade 1st round drafts picks anytime to whomever
wants them for proven players, noting that L.A. does not have any of it's
past 1st round draft picks in the lineup (two good 1st rounders, Carson and
Gellinas, were traded for Gretzky).

With the temporary pool of talent available in the ex-Soviet Union and Eastern
Europe to pick from, he may be right.

I think the current rule is that every European player has to be drafted
before he can be signed...i.e. there are no European free agents.

McNall is betting on liberalized free agency in the new CBA, and the
fact that he has deeper pockets than many teams...the trouble is
that he should invest some of that money in a competent GM first so
he knows where to throw his money around.
