It was announced today on the FAN 1430 in Toronto that Jim
Boni, the Canadian-born Italian league player charged with manslaughter
in the death of another hockey player in a freak accident during a game,
has pled guilty to the reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter. Tapes
introduced as evidence pointed to the fact that Boni did not intend
to harm the other player, who suffered from epilepsy and perhaps a heart
ailment that might have been a factor in his death. Boni was fined the
equivalent of $1800 (did not catch whether this was US or CDN). If
convicted on the more serious charge of manslaughter, Boni could have faced
10 years in prison.

This case was scary for a while. Glad to see it seems to have been
solved fairly satisfactorily.

Scary stuff, though, eh? Boni's slash was fairly deliberate, but it was a
light `love tap'. Jeez, this close to ten years in the slammer. What do you
think the situation had been if that had happened in an NHL game?

I think I saw a replay of the incident. It didn't even look hard enough
to injure someone who wasn't wearing ANY pads. Of course this is hard to
determine by watching it on TV, but still I have seen far worse that won't
even shorten a shift, let alone kill you.

The whole situation was pretty stupid if you ask me. Why don't we
just lock up an Italian SOCCER player who injures a Canadian in a game
with a kick to the shins? It would show just as much @#$%*^!
intelligence. I'm just glad it's over. I feel bad for both families
involved.

Big reasons for settlement, prosecuter finally found out
about hockey and Canada threatened to boycott Hockey Tourney
(world) coming up in Italy in a few years. Boni lost big
time for something that shouldn't have got past initial
investigation. His lawyers couldn't promise he would win
but he was promised no jail time to make the deal!!

That is why it was so very important for the NHL to get involved and offer
legal assistance to Boni. Had a precedent been set, imagine how busy the
courts would get in Canada and the US.

It's kind of funny that Boni was continually the one that was hung out to
dry, when it was the guy that he slashed who wasn't healthy and shouldn't have
been playing the game to begin with. When Tommy Soderstrom's heart is acting
funny, you don't see him playing in the games, because he is afraid something
bad might have happened.

Slashes like Boni's occur 2 or 3 times a game, and are assessed a 2 minute
penalty, if any (Boni's wasn't even a penalty)...not 10 years for manslaughter!
