The Oilers turned down the three draft picks that would have been
their compensation for Manson. Might have been smart, as these would
have been half- to 2/3rds the way through each draft round. Manson
can fetch more in a trade, as Gerald has already mentioned. Around
New York City, it has been lamented that the Rangers were too caught
up in the Lindros arbitration to think about this. James Patrick
knows that he was on the block once, can this be it? Rangers are
looking for that hardhitting defenceman and Jay Wells has not been
the one to fill that gap entirely (his presence in the place of
David Shaw was most welcome though; Wells, Manson and Domi (?) on
the blueline can generate a lot of black and blue next year ...).

True, but with all the free agents that Edmonton has, can they afford
to be offering that much money to Manson? If so, what happened to the
"We're losing money" talk of the owners during the strike? Remember,
all of the Lindros (he has a way of getting into almost every post doesn't
he?) deals involved large sums of money, and Quebec offered him a $50 mil.
contract.

If they plan on trading him, then I too aggree in what they did, but
have there been any trade rumors? If so, what are they? I don't get
too much Hockey news down here (LA) if it doesn't concern the Kings, and
isn't hockey season.

Who would the Oilers want from the Reangers?

Again, that could cost a whole lot of money.

Given the right offer, Manson could go in a trade...but I think
the Oilers will keep Manson and Murphy, and look to move Damphousse
and Tikkanen. Defenseman tend to be irreplacable...and next to
Ranford, Manson is probably the most important player on the Oilers
now. Montreal and Quebec probably have the most interest in
Damphousse. Montreal supposedly has offered Damphousse in the
neighborhood of $1 million/season, (supposedly too rich for the
Capitals, who settled for Carpenter instead
...am I going to enjoy Pollin's dilemma when Hatcher and
Iafrate march in to renegotiate, now that they know the Capitals
were willing to offer Manson over a million a season). Rumor
also has it that the Oilers would match the Canadiens offer for
Damphousse, and try to work a trade to Quebec for Ricci. If
the Oilers could get Corsonplus for Damphousse, I suppose I
could live with that also.
Gerald
Remember its not Sather that's offering the money...it Sather who has to
match what the other fools are offering.

Supposedly, Toronto, Chicago, Detroit, and I suppose New York are all
interested in Manson...I think Toronto would be the most likely trade
since I could see the Oilers viewing Ellett as a reasonable replacement
for Manson. With the other three, Sather would have to be extremely
interested in one of the younger players on the team...I'm pretty
certain that Manson will be an Oiler or a Leaf next year.
Gerald
The Leafs also expressed some interests in free-agent (former-Leaf) Vince
Damphousse. With the non-Lindros deal, the Leafs have enough players to
make a good trade with the Oilers.
The Leafs don't have anything to trade except Ellett and their prospects
like Potvin, Berehowsky, and Pearson. Macoun, Nattrass, Rouse, and
Gilmour are really too old to interest the Oilers. The Leafs are still
a team in desparate shape, although Fletcher has done a marvellous
job so far.

Hmmmm....is Manson a good rushing defenseman?? I know he has a big
blast from the point and plays a hard physical game, but I haven't
seen him move the puck up the ice all that much.
Bryan Murray says the Wings need a big, mobile defenceman to bring
the puck up the ice. Aparently, this was on the top of his wish
list. Something for which he would let some of the younger players go.
If he decides that Manson would fit the bill (I'm not sure that
he would), then I wouldn't be suprised to see Manson move to Detroit.
After all, we continually hear about what a greedy little pig
Pockington is and the Red Wings are the wealthiest organization
in hockey. If the price were right (many millions) and the
players were young enough (Sillenger/Kennedy/Racine) word might
come from above to make the move, even if the replacement players
weren't stars. Some of those bucks could go towards keeping the
Oiler crop of free agents happy.
Additionally, the Wings are rumored to be interested in Tikanen
and the ever reliable Petr Klima. :-)

Damphousse will not resurface in Toronto. If the Habs are offering LeBeau.
Coroson and a prospect, the Leafs are already out of the deal. Manson in a
Leaf uniform? It's a dumb deal if it costs them Dave Ellett, I'd take Ellett
over Manson hands down. The Leafs are weak enough, and Manson for Ellett is
definately making matters worse. But to say that the Leafs only have Ellett
as a bargaining tool is a little silly. Gilmour is hardly to old to attract
attention. The Oilers would gladly except him in exchage for Manson, but
Fletch ain't that dumb. Gilmour sought after throughout the League, the
Nords, who were on a youth movement in the Lindros sweepstakes, nixed a deal
with the Leafs when Gilmour was labelled untouchable, so I'd say he was
considered quite desirable. The rumour I heard had the Leafs dealing Drake
Berehowsky to Edmonton for the (Expensive) rights to wildly over-rated Dave
(Charlie) Manson. A very stupid trade, I hope it doesn't happen. Send
Damphousse to the Habs and Manson to the Rangers, then pay Joe Murphy what
he wants and tell fellow free agent and senior citizen Kevin Lowe to put up
or shut up, the Oilers can afford to lose him if he gets offered a sizeable
contract.
__Rob____________________92
Gilmour will have too big a salary and will not be of the proper age
to interest the Oilers...plus Fletcher wouldn't trade him anyway.
Quebec (or Buffalo) will undoubtedly offer Lowe more money than the Oilers will,
but Sather should tell him if he really wants the big salary for
the final couple of years of his career, go to Quebec, and he will
be welcome back for a position in the Oiler organization when his
career is over.
I still think Manson will be an Oiler...he is necessary because
MacIver and Hawgood are on the small size...MacIver is a more
than adequate NHL defenseman when paired with a physical defenseman.
Sather would have to be offered something awfully good to trade
Manson.
The Oilers probably cannot afford Damphousse...the Corson and Lebeau
swap would be a pretty good save. They'll pay Murphy and Manson,
and trade Damphousse or Tikkanen...that's my prediction anyway.

Hatcher renegotiated just last fall and makes close to a million. The Caps
agreed to terms with Iafrate earlier this week. Poile's dilema is not with
Hatcher and Iafrate marching in, it's with fans marching out...

Unless Bryan Murray has changed his view of offense, mobility, and
excitement from his days in Washington, he just got his top wish in
the mobility of Howe.
And I thought Naughty Dave Poile was putting together an ol' timers team...
