A few notes about ESPN/ESPN2: ESPN will televise 26 regular season NHL
games and up to 37 playoff games including the Stanley Cup Finals.
ESPN2, to be launched on October 1, will televise 75 regular season NHL
games and additional playoff games. CALL YOUR CABLE OPERATOR IF YOU
WANT ESPN2 ON YOUR CABLE SYSTEM.

The schedule for Jan-Apr 1994 has not been announced by ESPN yet.

Blackout rule: alternate game is shown to cable systems within a
50-mile radius of the arena of BOTH teams involved in the primary game.
ESPN does not send announcers to the alternate game; it simply picks
up the feed of a local telecast and put it on the alternate feed.

Satellite Info: ESPN2 will be on G5/14. Its feed is already up
with a scroll of sports news and scores. ESPN2 is expected to
scramble on or shortly after October 1. ESPN is on G5/9, while
ESPN's alternate feed is on G1/14. Both channels are scrambled
and require a VCII+/VCII-RS decoder and a subscription fee.

Here's a nice but probably unrealistic thought ... SportsChannel
New York normally runs two channels, one their local feed and the
other one a generic SportsChannel America feed which is taken over
as overflow (SCNY Plus) when two of the Islanders, Devils and Nets
are playing. However, some areas only have the local feed and if
an SC Plus event is still running at the end of the regular event,
or the local feed has a non-live event, the affected area gets the
live event. However, I'll be ecstatic if ESPN will do that with
areas that don't receive ESPN2 ...

By the way, is there any big change happening with the broadcast
contract up north? Or is it still the Molstar/HNIC/TSN monopoly?
[Since broadcasting local games is a hardship with our small
markets, and local stations don't have the required travel
budget, road games are the answer ... even if you need a home
crew in the studio to provide play-by-play for a satellite
feed lest we suffer the paid homers like SC ...]

No such luck. ESPN2 will have its own programming. When ESPN2
is showing live NHL Hockey, ESPN is likely to show college basketball
(November-March) and major-league baseball (April, May).

As I have mentioned before, Time-Warner, which has a cable monopoly
in Manhattan (Time-Warner Cable and Paragon Cable), has agreed
to carry ESPN2 for approximately 12 cents per subscriber in lieu
of paying a retransmission fee for WABC-TV (WABC-TV is owned by
Capital Cities/ABC, while ESPN/ESPN2 are 80% owned by Capital Cities/ABC).
However, Time-Warner's cable systems across the country will gradually
phase in ESPN2 rather than have it available on October 1 to all
6.9 million Time-Warner subscribers. The reasons are 1) many systems
have reached maximum channel capacity and these systems are waiting
for a contract to carry another satellite-delivered service to expire
in order to clear a channel for ESPN2, and 2) some systems are waiting
for January 1, 1994, when the FCC will allow cable systems to raise
their cable rates again. In any case, CALL YOUR LOCAL CABLE OPERATOR
TO DEMAND ESPN2 TO BE CARRIED ASAP.

The Molstar monopoly expires at the end of the 1993-94 season according
to _The_Hockey_News_. Some owners of Canada-based teams are
reluctant to sign TV rights over to Molson again. That could spell
the end of HNIC on CBC. Molson will not be out of the TV business, however,
since it owns Le Club de Hockey Canadien.

I was just wondering, what else is going to be on ESPN2? I heard that it is
aimed at a younger audience than its predecessor. Please E-Mail me or post
some info. Thanks!

There are going to be basically three main sports subjects that will be on
ESPN2. The are NHL Hockey, Auto Racing, and what I call MTV Sports. The
latter I assume will be things like Jet Ski Racing, Skiing, Surfing,
Snowboarding, well you get the idea.
