Jay,

Your Friend is right ! Great Britain struck GOLD in the 1936
Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. They actually broke
Canada's string of four consecutive Championships. Britain was
in a real hockey 'craze' at that period in time. They actually
had several transplanted Canadians on that team. Canada won
the silver that year and the USA got the bronze!

>Jay,

From what I have heard, that entire team was composed of a disgruntled
group of Canadians who were mad about not representing Canada at the
Olympics. They all had British citizenship and played for Britain. They
went on to defeat Canada and take the gold.

That is the story I heard. I am unsure about its validity.

anyone help me. Have they ever won a medal?

I'll have to check on the years, but they won two gold medals,
back around the thirties or so, if my memory of hockey history serves.

Incredible how far the British have fallen.

Of course, you could say the same thing about their football a.k.a.
soccer successes, but let's just keep that quiet, shall we?

GBR won the gold in either 1932 or 1936. The British team was made up
entierly by Canadians who held British citizenships. I believe that
there was some sort of misunderstanding regarding the Canadian entry in
the games with two teams thinking that they were to represent Canada.
The team that lost out ended up going as a British team as all Canadians
at that time also held British citizenship.

The British team was stocked by Canadians over there. Military types, I think.

They actually won a gold but I can't remember if it was in the olympics
or in the WC. Anyway all the players were from Canada with Brittish
passports. This happened a long time ago, around 1940 I think.

Prince Charles was the goalie for the team. He did not need a blocker
and glove because he used those big ears of his to block and catch
shots.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

From my FAQ-files WCMEDALS and OLYMPIC, here are Great Britains
complete medal history in WCs and Olymics.

World Championships Medalists 1920-1994:
========================================

Year Site Gold Silver Bronze

1938 Prague Canada Great Britain Czechoslovakia
1937 London Canada Great Britain Switzerland
1936 Garmisch- Great Britain Canada USA
Partenkirschen
1935 Davos Canada Switzerland Great Britain
1924 Chamonix Canada USA Great Britain

The Olympic hockey medals, 1920 - 1994
======================================

Site Gold Silver Bronze

1936 Garmisch, Germany Great Britain Canada USA
1924 Chamonix, France Canada USA Great Britain

From this I assume that 1924 and 1936 had combined WC and Olympic
tournaments.
