College hockey doesn't have a two-linepass rule. This seems to makethe
game more exciting to watch. Why does pro hockey have this rule?

If the NHL was actually concerned about improving the excitement
of their games, then the league would be giving us games to be
excited about.

The two line pass totally changes the way the game is played, particularly
(but not solely) on the power play. That's why college games are more
exciting.

The red line was introduced to the game during WWII, when the talent pool
of the league was depleted by the war. By introducing the two line pass
rule, the "replacement" players had an easier time competing with the
"real" pros who didn't fight in Europe. It slowed the game down, and
prevented the star players from dominating.
