The German professional hockey league 'DEL' (Deutsche Eishockey Liga) will
start its inaugural 1994-95 season on September 16th. 18 teams from former
Bundesliga 1 and 2 fight against each other twice (one home plus one away
match); an additional round follows where the single division league will
be overlayed by three regional divisions with 6 teams each, where regional
rivalries could be fought through. The results of this round then get
merged into the single division table. The top 12 teams after regular
season participate in the playoffs. There is no relegation and no
promotion to or from the amateur league 'Bundesliga 1'.
Teams competing in 1994-95:
Koelner Haie (Cologne Sharks)
Berliner Eisbaeren (Berlin Polar Bears)
Wild Wings Schwenningen

14. USENET Hockey Pool
The USENET Hockey Pool is in its 7th year of operation. Last season,
there were 261 teams from literally all over the world: every Canadian
province, about 30 of the 50 U.S. states, and nine other countries in
Europe and Asia.
The pool operates like a stock market. You start off with 1000 points
to "buy" the players of your team. You can sell and buy players during
the season based upon their current point performance. Transactions are
made by sending email messages, and standings are posted to
rec.sport.hockey on a weekly basis.
The entry deadline is the start of the first regular season game, each
season. Send email to Gilles Carmel (car...@netcom.com) for more information.
USENET playoff pool
The rules for the playoff pool are simple: you must pick 25 NHL players.
Your point total is the sum of your chosen players' point totals. If you
pick goalies, they earn 2 points for a win and 1 extra point for a shutout.
There are no restrictions on the makeup of your team. The strategy is
obvious. You want to pick players from teams you think will make the final
four or get lots of points early.
You must submit your team no later than the start of the first playoff game.
Your email must be "postmarked" before 7:00 PM EDT, April 16. The final
night of league play is April 14, so you will have a few days to think it
over.

16. Answers to some frequently asked questions:
Q: Why are the Montreal Canadiens called the Habs?
A: According to the magazine "Les Canadiens" (Number 2 of the 92-93
season), the following is the origin of the nickname "Habitants/Habs":
"Partial credit for this nickname actually goes to an American.
Reporter Tex Rickard had picked up on a rumour (a false one, of course)
someone had told him about the 'H' on the Canadiens' uniform. It seems
that someone mentioned that it stood for "habitant", a French word that in
those days was used to denote the farmers of Quebec.
"'This guy told Tex that the French-speaking players on the team came
from the country, and since they were "farmers", they were therefore
"habitants!"' recalls Camille Desroches. 'Habs' is simply a short form of
the word."
"That was back in the mid-twenties. The Canadiens had just won the
1923-24 Stanley Cup, and two teams from New York were just joining the NHL
(the Americans in 25 and the Rangers in 26). To understand Rickard's
thinking, it helps to remember that this was also a period of intense
development in a number of more remote regions of Quebec..."
Q: Why is the Montreal Canadiens logo a large C with an H within it?
A: When Club de Hockey Canadien was founded for the 1909/10 season, the
uniform consisted of a navy blue sweater with white narrow bands at the
shoulders connected to a band across the chest. The center of the chest
band had a white "C" on it. The pants were white and the stockings were
red.
When the team was sold the following year, it was renamed Club Athletique
Canadien. The sweater is now red with a green Maple Leaf in the center
bearing a gothic "C" in its center. The uniform was changed once again for
the 1911/12 season. The Maple Leaf on the sweater remained, but the
sweater now had blue, white, and red stripes. The "C" was replaced with
"CAC".
The Canadiens uniform was redesigned for the 1914/15 season. It had a
similar design to today's road uniform. The center crest had a "CA"
instead of the famous "CH".
The team reverted back to Club de Hockey Canadien for the 1916/17 season.
The crest was now a big "C" and inside a smaller "H", to represent "Club
de Hockey Canadien".
Other minor alterations have taken place over time, but the traditional
"CHC" has remained.

Q: How does a 5-minute power-play count in the penalty killing stats in
the NHL?
A: If X goals are scored, then the team gets credit for X goals in X+1
chances.
Q: How is +/- computed in the NHL?
A: First, +/- only applies to skaters. Except for a power-play goal, when

Q: What is the five-hole?
A: The space between a goalie's pads. There are five major scoring zones:
(1) upper left corner of goal, (2) upper right, (3) lower left, (4) lower

Q: What is the tie-breaking criteria for determining a seed for the NHL
playoffs?:
A: The following method, in order is used to determine priority:
1) Most wins
2) If two teams have identical records, priority goes to the team
which has the better head-to-head record in games played between
them during the season; however if the teams have played an odd number
of games then the first game played in the city that had the extra
home game is not counted. If more than two teams have identical
records, priority goes to the team with the higher winning percentage
among games played between those teams.
3) If the teams are still tied after the first two criteria, priority
goes to the team with the better goals for/against differential for
the entire regular season.

Q: What is the origin of the term "hat trick?"
A: Hat trick - Three successive performances of a feat by the same
individual in a contest. The oldest use is probably in cricket, where a
hat trick is the dismissal by the bowler of 3 batsmen with 3 consecutive
balls, for which the bowler apparently received a bonus of a new hat. The
term is widely used in hockey and soccer to indicate the scoring of 3
goals by one individual in a single game. Originally the hat trick was
the scoring of 3 consecutive unanswered goals (commonly referred to as a
"natural" hat trick), but they need not be consecutive or unanswered to
qualify as a hat trick today. The term has also been used of a jockey's
riding a winner in 3 consecutive races or winners in an annual race for 3
consecutive years. A notable exception to the 3 successive performances
which characterize a hat trick in other sports is its occasional use in
baseball to mean that a player has hit for the cycle - a single, double,
triple, and home run in one game. The term was originally applied
to hockey when the Biltmore Hat Company of Guelph, Ontario offered a
free hat to any player scoring three goals in a game. For many
years, the Guelph junior hockey club carried the nickname
"Biltmores". Source: Webster's Sports Dictionary. G. & C. Merriam
Company (Springfield, MA): 1976.

Q: What's the story concerning Jim Schoenfeld, Don Koharski and "Have
another doughnut!"? (known as the "Mother's Day Walk-Out")
A: In the Wales Conference finals in 1988, the coach of the New Jersey
Devils was very upset with the calls of referee Koharski. At the end of
the game, the two met in the runway to the dressing room. Besides the
arguing, Schoenfeld was accused of bumping Koharski (he may have tripped
by catching his skate off of the runway carpet). More words followed, with
Koharski claiming that Schoenfeld pushed him and Schoenfeld calling him
"You fat pig! Go have another Doughnut!" etc. The result was a one game
suspension of Schoenfeld by the league. NJ management challenged the
suspension by going outside the league and getting a court injunction
rendering the suspension invalid (remember this is playoff time). The
referees for the next game decided not to call the game, and after an hour
delay, New Jersey's off-ice officials dressed and the game was played. NJ
beat Boston in that game. Schoenfeld served the suspension the next game
since the game was in NJ. Boston ended up winning the series 4-3.
