I am a new fan of hockey. I wasn't around when Lindros made his way into the
NHL, although I am a fan of his on the ice, the more I hear about his off ice
attitude I like the guy even less. I am just wondering if someone could clear
up the incident where he was supposed to have spit beer on a woman, and
what is the deal with his mother. I am curious as to the relationship that he
has with her and how it affects his hockey.
And what about little brother Brett? Is he going to turn into a
headache as well? I have already heard negative things about his whinning.
But a little background on the situation would probably clear things up for me.

I may be a little biased because i live in Philadelphia, and I am a big
Flyers fan, but I think you are getting your opinions from a very
vocal minority of people who have a personal dislike, grudge, whatever
you wnat to call itfor Eric Lindros. First. many fans, especially those
in the Quebec area dislike him because he refused to play for the
Nordiques, the team that drafted him. They claim that it was because he
hated the French culture in the area. I tend to disagree there, at least
I have never heard that came directly from him. He didn't want to play
for an organization that was run by someone that he disliked. I would
guess that his assessment of the Nordique front office was proven by
their attempt to trade him to two teams, the Flyers and the Rangers while
having agreements with both of them. I would also like to interject that
he stated his disinterest in playing for Quebec BEFORE they drafted him.
And, I don't know about you, but I'd never want to work for someone I
dislike, if I had the ability to work for someone else.

I remember the beer incident as a woman being in a bar, In Ontario I
believe, and harassing him more than a little. I believe he told her
off, she spit beer at him, and he dumped his glass of beer on her head.
I would have done the same thing, as would have most of the people who
badmouth him for it.

I have met Eric Lindros on 3 occasions here in Philadelphia, and have
founbd him to be great. My daughter had her picture taken with him at
the Flyers Carnival last month, and he was nice to her. He had pictures
taken for 5 hours with fans, and I have yet to hear anyone who had one
bad experience with him. I'd like to see those that hate him pose for
600 pictures with all kinds of people saying all kinds of things, and
handle it that well. Remember, he is still only 22.

As far as his mother goes, I believe through most of his bad press, ie.,
the Quebec incident, she was his official manager/agent/whatever you
would call it. I've seen many players who took bad advice from agents,
or who had loudmouthed agents, and rarely do I see anything bad said
about them. I remember that Mark Messier held out much of this
pre-season wanting to renegotiate his contract. Anyone want to call him
an ass? I wasn't really following the story when his mother was
involved, so I don't know everything she/he said, but that was 4 years
ago. Let it drop. He was like 18 at the time. Anyone out there ever do
anything they might regret when they were 18?

Bottom line is have whatever opinion of him that you want, just don't let
it be swayed by closed-minded individuals who have a greater motive than
his play or his attitude. To me he is the absolute best player in the
NHL right now, but again, that is my opinion.

The Lindros saga is a long one. Three of my favourite highlights of his off
ice antics:

While on the Canadian Olympic team he referred to some of his French
Canadian team mates as frogs while in the locker room.

Said he did not want to play for the Quebec Nordiques because
there is no way he would ever subject himself to the tax system there. Yet
he would have been willing to play for Montreal 8).

Said he did not want to play for Quebec city because he could
not "wear a baseball cap and drive a 4x4" while feeling at home
there.

At first he was also refusing to play for the Nordiques on the basis that
they were not offering him enough. But when Aubut offered him more than
any other team would (Aubut knew Lindros would not accept) it became
clear that Lindros dislike of the Nordiques and a life in Quebec city were
his major objections. During this whole period his mother made several
outrageous statements and made the headlines quite often in the province's
sports page. Statements which as a French Canadian I do not care to remember.
His mother took up so much press that she got more attention than Eric
and his agent (Meehan?) at some points. All this in an attempt to defend her
son's position while accompanying him everywhere. The reporters in Quebec saw
a gold mine of controversy in her and took advantage of it. What is obvious to
me is that Lindros' antics were over-reported in Quebec and under-reported
elsewhere. At a certain point Lindros was disliked so much here for some of
his views that when Team Canada played Team USA at the Forum during the last
Canada cup Lindros was severly booed throughout the game. For a Team Canada
game in Quebec city they found an excuse for not having him play. To this day
I haven't seen Lindros win any publicity contracts in Quebec. Not that such a
small market matters to him anyway.

The beer shampoo charge is something for which Lindros was not found guilty.
So anything beyond that is speculation and we should let it rest despite
the controversy.

The good news is that Bobby Clarke seems to be a good influence on
Lindros and things seem to have stabilized. And as Prof. Caron would say
about Brett Hull: "We're not paying Hull for what he says otherwise he
wouldn't be paid much" 8) (translated from a French radio interview).

Salut,

Eric

I never wanted you to think that I didn't like Lindros. I admire him greatly
as a player, but was a little unsure of what he was like off the ice. And it
was that that I did not like.

I would have done the same when it comes to the beer incident. However, I
probably would have ended up in jail on assault.

At 18 I think that we all regret listening to our mothers. I know I do(at
times).

Thank you for clearing up the incidents for me. I was not there at the
beginnig of Lindros' career so I was unable to follow what went on. I am a
Flyers fan, and agree that he is one of the rising stars of the NHL today. I
must not have thought too much of what people where posting to continue
watching #88.

As for the photos at the Flyer's Carnival, if you happen to have any lying
around that you want to get rid of let me know. Any of the team and esp.
Lindros, I will be happy to take them off of your hands. I'll reimburse you
for the film. Post me directly on this request.

Thank you David for taking the time to respond to my post.

I have to agree with many of the postings here. _BOTH_ Lindros' are
whiney little brats who have not graduated out of their diapers yet!

Now don't get me wrong - I think that on ice, Eric is going to become the
best player in the NHL...with his size, shot, and ability he can't go
wrong...Brett is an overrated loser who only got drafted because he was a
Lindros...I have seen only one or two good hits from him, and he _can't_
score like his brother - so why the first round darfting????

OK - I really don't like Brett at all - his whining attitude after
getting cut fron Canada's Junior team really pissed me off! He'll have
to learn to deal with dissapointment alot more in his future - I can only
hope he handles it better.

Just my $0.02.

going to become? with the flyers recent performance and his leading the
scoring race, combined with his physical presence, why don't you consider
him to be one of the best now? what more does he have to do? ok, he could
lead the flyers to the cup, but aside from that i think eric's come pretty
darn far.

agreed. the isles got suckered, and compounded it by offering a 7.5 mill
deal. even worse given that last year they drafted todd bertuzzi, a player
of similar proportions who has done well in the minors. who knows if either
one will make any significant impact in the nhl. given that both are likely
gambles, i think it would have made more sense to sign bertuzzi for
cheaper. even though brett has the lindros name, i can't see him packing
too many fans into the coliseum unless his level of play increases
dramatically.

unless the isles make some serious adjustments, brett will have plenty of
opportunity to deal with disappointment. :)

I dunno about Brett. But I saw that tape over hte weekend with the Isles
and Devils game. Lindros is in a clinch with some devil by the devil bench
and the ensuing scuffle puts lindros leaning into the devils bench right in
front of the premier whiner and dirty player in the NHL: Mr. Claude
Lemieux.

It was kinda funny, Lemieux looks around for the referee, sees he's not
looking his way, and gives Brett a nice uppercut to the jaw! Brett goes
ballistic and a rhubarb ensues.

If you hate Brett you've gotta like that, and if you like Brett you know
there is someone worse than him out there (i.e., c. lemieux)
