The Daily News wrapped up the trading news with a couple of items on
trades that didn't go through. The Whalers were interested in Craig
Simpson and had offered Kevin Dineen for him; also part of the package
was Dave Babych, for whom they wanted Steve Smith but the Oilers only
offered Jeff Beukeboom so the deal was off.

Capitals were also interested in Bill Ranford before they turned to
Mike Liut after Edmonton's rebuff.

Another "almost" trade I heard on CBC was a blockbuster: Vincent Damphousse
and Daniel Marois to Quebec for Joe Sakic and Quebec's first round choice
next year (read: Eric Lindros). Apparently the Leafs felt that the gamble
that Quebec would pick first was too high.

We've talked about the proposal that a lottery system for all non-playoff
teams would be introduced next year so that teams don't lose intentionally
for the right to pick Lindros. I hope the plan goes through:

1. The Kings aren't getting any better. Suppose they miss the playoffs
next year, as Vancouver rebounds from this year's disastrous showing.

2. The Kings win the lottery.

3. The Oilers, having obtained L.A.'s first pick in 1991 from the Gretzky
sale, pick Lindros.

Maybe the Oilers would throw a couple of games to the Canucks if they were in
a tight battle with the Kings for a playoff spot, to get that 20% chance.

:-)

Well, that's about the price Toronto would demand for Damphousse and
Marois. Damphousse is now the holder of Toronto's recored for most points
in a season by a left winger, with 88 or so including tonight's game.
And Marois is a very talented right winger. These two guys are a big
part of the future of the franchise, so the Leafs would not settle for
anything less than two star-quality players (and Sakic and Lindros are
definitely star-quality!).

Toronto would be crazy to trade Damphousse and Marois for Sakic and Lindros(?).
They would be taking a big chance that Lindros would turn out ( assuming they
would get him ). Remember Joe Murphy, who was supposed to be a superstar ?
He hasn't exactly been a Mario Lemieux type. Damphousse and Marois are
incredible to watch, as they are both very exciting players. I really hope
the Leafs keep them or trade them both to Montreal :-)
