This has been driving me nuts for years on end and no one I asked
could come up with an answer.
Why are the Canadiens called Les Habitants and how did that name
come about?


arne - ashamed to be playing the sport for 16 years and not knowing
something everybody else probably knows anyway

It was meant as a joke in 1925, when the first NHL game was played in New York, between the Canadien and the NY Americans. A NY newswriter asked his colleague from Montreal what the logo meant. One English journalist replied that the H was for Habitants since many of the French players were from the rural settings in Quebec. Everybody knows that the logo means Club de Hockey Canadien.
