1) CCM Tacks with the Pro-lite 3 blade. According to him, the PL3 blade is
the strongest on the market and is the best designed blade he works on. The
652 boot is still handmade and is of top quality. This combo, he claims, is
the best and lasts longer than any skate he's worked with.
2) Bauer Supremes or Comps with ICM blade.
3) Bauer Supremes or Comps with Tuuk Plus blade.
4) CCM with Tuuk plus blade. (652's or 752's)
5) Graf with ICM or Tuuk plus.
6) Daoust and Mega with Tuuk plus or ICM
BTW, Bauer, Mega, Daoust, Tuuk, Cooper and other Canstar products are now
owned by Nike. Their prices will rise dramatically now. Stick with what you
can afford and don't settle for anything less than what your foot feels best
in. A $400 improperly fitted Bauer Comp is meaningless compared to a snug,
comfortable Riedell or Graf. What do the best skaters skate in? Coffey uses
Bauer or Graf; Kariya uses Bauer Comps; Messier uses CCM 752 w/Prolite;
Bure uses Mega; Fedorov uses Graf. There is no best skate. There is only the
best skate for you.

P.S.- To break them in Really well wear wet warm socks with your skates on
I have to agree with this. My Bauer Supreme 3000s are like
slippers. Unbelievable! However, if you're just starting skating, and
aren't sure if you want to take it up seriously, I'd suggest a pair of
molded boot skates first (the hockey purists are going to slaughter me on
this one). It's just my experience, but when I was a kid I first tried a
pair of cheap leather boot skates, then a pair of the nylon mesh/leather
type, but they never felt at all comfortable so I was turned off. Then I
got a pair of $40 Micron plastic molded skates with the fabric insert and
they were so comfortable I never wanted to take them off. I learned to
skate with those skates. :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
For serious competitive hockey, however, they're inappropriate.
They give you great support, which you need to start, but they don't give
you the range of flexibility for competitive hockey. For recreational
hockey, they're fine. I believe Micron is still around and still makes
the molded skates, and I know Daoust offers a couple of models, but other
than that I can't help you. But I guarantee you, if you don't want to
spend $300 to get top-of-the-line Bauer Supremes or CCM SuperTacks, get a
molded boot skate rather than a lower model of the fabric/leather type
skate. You'll find them much more comfortable, much more supportive, and
if you learn to skate without pain you may get good enough to need a pair
of 3000s.
If you are starting out, the Bauer 100 (still available) are an excellent
choice, as are the Mega 10-70's. Both offer excellent support and carry the
Tuuk blades. The ankle support of both models is very good. And the footbeds
offer fairly decent control and comfort. The prices are in the mid $100's
(US). Great Skate out of Amherst, New York, carries them in their catalogue.
It isn't true that the only good skates are from CCM and Bauer. Graf skates
are worn by Coffey, Fedorov and many European players. They are the ONLY
skate that is completely hand-made. They are very supple and require little
break-in time. They are also the lightest skate on the market today. From my
understanding, they fit like nothing you've ever felt before. (The Euros do
make comfortabe gear, even if JOFA is ugly.)
Riedell makes a good skate. Mega and Daoust are made by Canstar (Nike) who
also makes Bauer and Cooper products.
Buy what your feet like and fit into with little or no discomfort. Know the
level of skater you are and what you are looking for in your skating. Buy
the best blade you can! Don't think that just because the upper is great that
the blade logically follows. My faves are the ProLite 3 and the Tuuk Plus.
Both are excellent. The P3 is my fave because of the steel and its genius
design allowing all sorts of sharpening variations.
Happy skating! :-)
i to had the molded boot when i was younger and i probably whould be in
the house leages right now i use the bauer 1009 right now there exatly
the same as 4000s exept the 4000s have a bit more gell and $50 less

I cannot believe that you neglected to mention Graf. They have been
rated by many a magazine as being one of the if not the best skate on the
market today.
During the Cup finals, I saw Coffey wear CCM skates during one game. Next game,
he was back on Grafs, or Bauers (couldn't tell). Puzzling why he would only
wear them for one game, especially during the finals.
