That is unfair to Peter Bondra (Washington's top scorer). He was completely
innocent in this incident. Suspend Hunter harshly and fine him but leave
Bondra out of Hunter's punishment.

I agree. I do not think punishment should be dished out to innocent people. I
think you need to swing the other way and instead off looking for newer ways
for punishment look at ways to compensate the Islanders (org, players, fans)
and obviously Turgeon.

I agree that suspending an innocent player is ridiculous. But how about
this idea? I heard it on one of the Philadelphia call-in shows. Suspend
Hunter for <insert your favorite number here> games and Washington loses
his roster spot during the suspension. Thus not only is the goon penalized,
but his team as well. This would attempt to offset any gain the goon's
team would have by injuring an opposing player by forcing them to go one
man short. And of course heavy fines would go along with the suspension.
I kinda like this idea. Anyone else?

Sounds like a pretty good idea, but now you're not penalizing one innocent
player(Bondra) you're penalizing the whole team. Not only this but if the Caps
decide that they will go without a forward for example, they will play three
lines and alternate players on the fourth line. Doesn't seem to be too much of
a penalty. How many times do we see the fourth line anyway?
What I really think will happen is that Bettman will make the fine so
significant that it will hurt the player who does the cheap shot, a la NBA. Of
course in the NBA the fines are a drop in the bucket for superstars. I hear
Turgeons agent is thinking of filing a suit against Hunter.
This is actually a good idea, although I think that making the Caps lose a
roster spot for the whole time is a bit rough, since not all of them were
involved on the play. How about this: Suspend Hunter for 40 games, all
of the playoffs next season, have half his salary (or however) for a fine,
and the Caps lose a roster spot for 10 games. Also fine the Caps an
inordinate amount of money. Wishful thinking....

That wouldn't be fair. You don't punish the innocent because of
the wrong that the guilty has done.
