Greetings,

There was a story in Monday's Toronto Star picked up from the newswires
about a guy in Newfoundland and the US creator of a NEW HOCKEY stick. The
picture shows the double curved blade. It is supposed to make it easier
to take backhand shots. This stick looks very weird. I was wondering if
this thing is for real. I checked the date and it doesn't say APRIL 1.

According to the article it "looks like a duckbill". I think this thing
looks more like a dangerous weapon. If there's someone in St. John's NFLD
around find this guy named Adrian Smith, he's a magazine publisher, and
see if you can try it out.

Yes it is true. CBC had an article on it and they showed the stick. It looks
like a siamese twin blade that splits apart into two blades as you reach the
end of the blade. It allows a curved blade on the forehand and a straight
blade on the backhand.

Apparently the CAHA is not ready to approve the stick for use in it's
association until further studies are completed.

About the two way curved stick.....This is a joke... I play hockey
about twice a week and I am also a Pee-wee hockey coach as well
as help out with my sons beginner hockey...I am on the ice a lot
and have developed a pretty good backhand and I am using either
a christian slap sock blade or sherwood 950 blade...both have pretty
good curves to my forehand.....Its all about feeling the puck on
your stick <both sides> and moving it from there...needing a double
curved stick or a righty using a lefties stick to get good backhands
indicates lack of practice or a lack of touch....

Yeah, I saw it. I pulled the story and the pick of the wire to put in
the morning paper. It does look a little silly and seems to me to have
no practical use. If you cannot get a decnt backhand with a normal
stick, then you do not really belong playing the game.

just another dumb trick-idea to try to get some bucks off the gullable
people out there!

I'm from just outside St.John's and yes the article is not a joke. In
fact this Adrien Smith fellow I believe was trying to get One of the minor
leagues(IHL or AHL not sure which) to use the sticks. It was denied but
he's trying hard to get it legalized. Well that's what I heard on the
radio last week. Anyone else shed some light on this?

I stand corrected. It's the CAHA not a minoe league as I previously posted.

The new stick is in fact a true story. The advantage will be for controlled
back hand shots/passes. The blade curves both waysto the tip.

It is called the bi-blade and was invented by a guy in the NE US. It is
being manufactured and developed by a Newfoundland company. The Canadian
Hockey Assoc. (formerly CAHA) recently banned the use of the stick,
claiming it gave players an "unfair advantage." what utter crap. What
would they have said if Stan Mikita invented the curve blade today.

Look for this stick to catch on.

Stig (sticking it to you, in Newfoundland)

Talk about stupid!

Oh, an American made it, eh? Figures.

I certainly hope NOT!!! You want a better backhand shot/pass?
PRACTICE. Don't use this mockery of a hockey stick. It belongs in the
old-timers tour with that guy who uses all those gimmick sticks -- the
extendable stick, the large blade stick, and the stick with a blade at
both ends. Now you can add this stick to that list. Good for a laugh,
but belongs nowhere near a real hockey game.

What the hell is this? I don't understand the Canadian animosity towards
the US? I mean, we in the US hardly ever even *think* about Canada, let
alone berate it... It seems to be the big-brother syndrome. We ignore you,
so some Canadians feel we are their mortal enemy. (Let me correct my
earlier statement and make that *some* Canadians). An American made it,
so it must be bad, right? Yeah, all us Americans are cloned copies of
each other. That is like saying all Canadians live in igloos and fight
polar bears on their way to work.

Let me clarify:
1) We (Americans) are not out to "get" Canada, well most of us anyway.
2) It is stupid to group all Americans together, just like it would
be stupid for me to group all Canadians together.
3) Most Americans don't even care about Canada, so why all the animosity
back at us?

I just think people should think before posting this "an American is
involved so it must suck" or "Canada sucks". Maybe we should think
about it before we claim it to be truth.

And if there was supposed to be a smiley there, I apologize profusely.
This is just something that has been getting on my nerves ever since
I've been reading r.s.h. (about 3 years now), and I needed to rant.

There's no need to explain, Mike. We know that Americans are not really out
to get us, and we know it's stupid to group Americans or Canadians (or any
other groups) together. (Okay, most of us know) Many of the jabs are done
in humour, and as for the animosity toward Americans, your third point
pretty much hit it on the head. In GENERAL (more than any other large
country), Americans know very little about the rest of the world, Canada
incl. A perceived ingorance (arrogance?) of the world will cause animosity
in the rest of the world because most other countries learn at least
something of the other members of Earth. Isn't America part of this
planet? If so, why don't the people know anything about it? Do they think
they're too good for Earth? It may sound silly, but that is how much of the
world thinks about America. Americans are disliked because many of them
don't know what's going on in the world and don't care. They go en mass to
other parts of the world as tourists and compare what they see with America
instead of trying to see each nation as someplace entirely unique.
(different= not necessarily inferior). We can all learn from each other's
cultures, and Americans are not excluded because their society, while having
many benefits, is not perfect. No societys are. So are all Americans
ignorant, arrogant, and stupid? No, but some are. Are all Canadians
ignorant, paranoid haters of America? No, but some are. And guess, what?
Some from both groups just happen to read rec.sport.hockey!! Many of the
rest have a lot of fun baiting them, too!

Let's just remember that hockey is what brought all of us here and leave the
rest of the stuff down to a bare minimum.
