1) To L.A.: Randy Gilhen, Charlie Huddy, Jim Thomson, #81 pick 1991
To Minnesota: Todd Elik
I like this trade for the Stars. Elik will eventally replace Bobby Smith or
Neal Broten (maybe sooner than we think!) Does L.A. have any NHL-proven
centers in their system at all? (With one obvious exception). They must have
another deal in the works, probably a major one, for a player with a big big
salary whose team cannot afford. LaFontaine? Sakic? Lindros? Hmm... stay
tuned.
2) To Minnesota: Craig Ludwig
To Vancouver: Dave Babych
To Islanders: Tom Kurvers
Islanders toss away their defensive anchor. Vancouver gambles a bit on injury-
prone Babych, but Kurvers was a journeyman at best, anyway. Ludwig is a
physically punishing defenseman with a few years left, who should prosper in
Minnesota, and buy time for the development of Derian Hatcher and Richard
Matvichuk. Again, advantage to the Stars (is this really Bobby Clarke pulling
these deals off???)
3) To Quebec: Mikhail Tatarinov
To Washington: Eric Lavigne
Quebec gets immediate blue-line help thanks to a defensive numbers game in
Washington. The Caps get a real solid prospect who should help the club within
a few years. On the surface, I like this trade for Washington, but I don't
think this is the only deal being cooked up by these two clubs.
On Friday there were 2 trades:
1) To Boston: Stephen Leach
To Washington: Randy Burridge
Burridge is a speedy rodent with a proven scoring touch, while Leach is a
grinder who never has filled the net as an NHL pro. The scary thing is, Leach
is the type of player that usually scores 30 goals on a Bruins team. But for
now, I give the nod to Washington.
2) To Washington: Shawn Chambers
To Minnesota: Steve Maltais, Trent Klatt
I guess Minnesota needs depth, or figured that Chambers would never live down
the fact that Mario undressed him for a crushing goal in the Finals. Whatever
the case, I still like this trade for Washington, despite the fact that they
need defensemen like Iraq needs bombs falling on them.

I'll add another comment: as is, it looks like Washington is getting the
better player given past performances. However, Boston is known for picking up
capable players that aren't performing and causing them to perform. I don't
know if Leach will add much, but perhaps playing on a team with more
consistency than Washington has ever offered will help.
Tom
Washington has plenty of right wings who can at least play adequately
and a shortage of left wings who can...which is the main reason for
the trade.
