Norris McDonald a Kingston Ontario Sports News reporter for the Kingston
Whig Standard called Brett Lindros on the phone on Monday Dec 28 to ask
him what had happened in the scuffle that broke out in the waning minutes
of Sunday Night's Canada-Russia exhibition hockey game in Peterborough
Ontario which Canada won 5-4. Brett started to laugh because according
to the Canadian Press report this is what happened.
" Lindros (on loan from the Kingston Frontenacs) and Russia's Valerie
Nikulin were involved in a fight in the last two minutes. Each player got
a five-minute major and Nikulin was given an additional penalty for
something he did during the altercation."
What Lindros was asked when he'd stopped laughing, was the "something"
that Nikulin did during the scrap?
`` He bit me, said Lindros. "The guy bit me."
Brett the younger brother of Philadelphia Flyers star Eric Lindros has been
on loan from the Frontenacs to the Canadian National team since mid-December

I was at that game... Nikulin was down on his knees in front of the Russian
net, when Lindros shoved him in the face (I'm not sure why, that's the first
notice I took of the incident). There was a fight after that between the
two, and I thought that Lindros was going to get an extra 2 for beeing the
instigator. When Lindros was in the penalty box, he pointed to his right
wrist, and I got the impression that he was trying to point out to the ref
that he had been bitten. I guess he was! With the score tied 4-4, and less
than 2 minutes to go, Canada was going to have a power-play to try to win the
game. But Tikhonov pretended he didn't know what was going on (i.e., that
Nikulin had the extra 5), and didn't send anybody to the box. After about
5 minutes of arguing with the refs, the Russian bench received a 2 minute
minor (probably for delay of game - the 3500 sell-out crowd was getting
impatient:-), and finally sent 2 players to the box. Canada's Derek Mayer
cashed in on the 5 on 3, to give Canada the 5-4 win. The game was in fact
quite good (these 2 teams sure make the Peterborough Memorial Arena look
pretty small!), except for that whole episode. For some odd reason, Brett
Lindros was chosen the MVP. I couldn't see why, since he was non-existent
for most of the game...
