I am researching all major sports in attempt to find out which sports
are the most popular sports in the world. I have yet to find any
information that lists which sports have the most participants, most
fans, etc. Therefore, I am asking for your opinion(s). I am trying to
be fair to all sports and countries. Please give me your list of the
most popular sports in both your native country and the entire world. I
am listing my opinion(s) below as an example. Please post your list(s)
or email them to me: parke...@hotmail.com. I will post the results.

1. Soccer (football) American Football
2. Basketball Baseball

i think you need to clarify whether you are talking about fans or
participants. in the cases of both #1 and #2 in the US i think it makes a
huge difference.
My humble guess would be that, in the western world at least, golf would
have the most participants among organised sports. Non-organised
recreational activites such as swimming or fishing might have more
people doing, and for backyard participation (or back alley, or
neighbourhood park, etc) it would be soccer taking the world #1 spot.
Here is my list as requested - popularity, not participation:
WORLD AUSTRALIA
1. Soccer Cricket
2. Tennis Football (Australian)
3. Basketball Rugby League
4. Golf Tennis
5. Cycling Golf
6. Motor Sports Swimming
7. Racing (Horses/Dogs) Netball
8. Athletics Basketball
9. Baseball Rugby Union
10.Boxing Motor SPorts
11.Martial Arts Horse Racing
12.Alpine Skiing Boxing
The popularity of Athletics in Australia is inflated at present by the
coming Olympics. The next generation of Australian track & field
competitors will not have the incentive of a home Olympic Games and
their performances will be commensurately less spectacular and less
attention-holding.

I seriously doubt that cricket is the most poular sport in Oz. What criteria
are you using? Crowds? TV ratings?

Soccer *has* to be in the top twelve in Australia, and would probably land
somewhere in the first four positions. I'd hardly call swimming and boxing
'popular' amongst non-participants. Ditto netball.

Lack of regional bias. Cricket is popular in both attendance and TV
viewing terms across the entire country. The two dominant football
codes are clearly regional - even though Brisbane or Sydney might sell
out their home AFL games, on the same weekend 4 times that many people
will attend games in Melbourne. In Adelaide and Perth, rugby league is
very minor in its appeal.
Newspaper coverage is a useful indicator. Cricket gets full coverage
everywhere, but League dominates the Sydney papers whilst Aussie Rules
fills the Melbourne dailies.

If soccer were so very popular outside a narrow sector of fans, then the
NSL would not face annual crises because strongly-followed and powerful
clubs would enforce a stable competition management. I guarantee that
the English Premier League has more numerous loyal fans in Australia
than all but 3 or 4 of the local clubs. I would rather watch Arsenal
than Marconi any morning of the week (esp this Friday).
Clubs and pubs are full of non-participating clowns glued to the screen
every time there is a decent fight on show, eg Tyson vs Holyfield. That
indicates popularity. Likewise, the worshipping masses who make the
1500-metre Final the 2nd-highest rating sports event for the year
(behind the Melbourne Cup) mostly couldn't swim 1500 in under a week.
I concede that the sellout crowds at netball matches are mostly netball
players. But you must admit that there are one hell of a lot of those.
Get down to your local courts this Saturday and play "spot the guy".
I agree. One other point -- motorsports do draw a rather larger audience
than netball, basketball, and rugby.

True, but the support the local football codes get during their seasons
would be collectively higher than cricket in it's season.

Ahh, you didn't specify *Australian* soccer. A soccer fan is a soccer fan,
regardless of where his favourite team is. And the Perth Glory gets more
people to it's games than the Warriors do....

Not where I live. And how many times a year do those guys fight? Or anyone
worth watching for that matter.

Once every four years? Hardly popular. Aussies would watch lawn bowls at the
Olympics if we though we were going to win it :-)

Netball is close to the top of the list in terms of participants. Depends on
your slant on popular I suppose.

I would have thought FIELD Hockey would be more popular than Ice
Hockey.
