Does somebody has a list of all hockey clubs (NHL) + an
an explanation of their names?
e.g. Oilers (Edmonton) - petrole in Alberta (????)
Jeff
>G'day,
>Jeff
I have the following explanations from the Nov.'93 Beckett Hockey
Monthly: (I abbreviated some of them)
EASTERN CONFERENCE:
Boston Bruins-Business store owner Charles Adams made two demands for his
1924 franchise nickname-brown & yellow team colors to match his stores and
that the name means strength and power. A fan named the team in a contest.
Buffalo Sabres-Team officials wanted name not used in pros, easily used in
headlines,and straying fr. buffalo/bison variations. 13,000 suggestions,4
were Sabres. Others:Bees,Mugwumps,Flying Zeppelins,
Knoxen,Herd,Border Riders,and Comets.
Florida Panthers-H.Wayne Huizenga wanted to draw attention to the
endangered Panther.
Hartford Whalers-When originally in WHA,club was named New England Whalers
for two reasons-1.Massachusetts seaport towns connected to whaling
2.Nickname had WHA in it (WHAlers) Name later changed to Hartford Whalers.
Montreal Canadiens-Ottawa sportsman J.Ambrose O'Brien gave his 1909 team
the name of Club de Hockey Canadien. For a while, only they could sign
French players. Team logo:"H" refers to Club de Hockey Canadien, not Les
Habitantes,the unofficial nickname.
New Jersey Devils-After moving fr.Colorado, they switched from Rockies to
Devils. It was the most popular choice in 10,000 entries. The Jersey Devil
is a half-man,half-beast who stalked NJ's Pine Barrens for 250 years.
Others say Devil was 13th child of Mother Leeds, jinxed by
gypsies.Others:Blades,Meadowlanders,Americans,
Meadowlarks,Colonials,Jaguars,Gulls,Lightning,Coastals,Patriots,and
Generals.
NY Islanders-Islanders selected to separate from other New York sports
teams.
NY Rangers-MSG President Tex Rickard's team was unoffically known as Tex's
Rangers (play on Texas Rangers police) but Rangers was the official name.
Ottawa Senators-As capital of Canada, natural nickname for 1901 amateur
team. Later, they moved to St.Louis. Expansion team dug up old history and
the new Senators were born.
Philadelphia Flyers-(Some from my memory) After 25,000 entries,a committee
chose Flyers, although the winning entry by a kid was spelled
Fliers, because it went phonetically with Philadelphia. (Winner got season
tickets and other prizes, never really became big fan.)
Pittsburgh Penguins-Nickname has no connection to city, team never
justified decision. (I know the triangle stands for Pittsburgh's Golden
Triangle.)
Quebec Nordiques-Committee named them Nordiques (Then WHA) because they
were the Northernmost team in pro hockey at 52N,72W.
Tampa Bay Lightning-Phil Esposito,Pres.and GM,saw lightning when trying to
obtain franchise. TB also lightning capital of world.
Washington Capitals-12,000 entries,finalists were Domes,Cyclones,
Pandas,Streaks,Comets. Owner Abe Pollin, with final say, named the team
after the city (Not Capitol as in Capitol building,Capital as in capital
of USA) which fans said was bad move. 3 basketball teams w/
same name had folded.
WESTERN CONFERENCE:
Calgary Flames-10,000 entries while in Atlanta,198 said Flames. Followed
history of Atlanta being burned down. Runner up was Thrashers, also a
favorite when NFL's Falcons were named. 1980-Moved to Calgary.
Chicago Blackhawks-Founding owner,Major Frederic McLaughlin,
named team after WW2 unit he fought in. Unit was named after a Chief Black
Hawk.
Dallas Stars-When in Minnesota, hockey fans were asked for opinions. The
Minn. nickname is Etoile de Nord (Star of the North),so 52 named them
North Stars. Name condensed with move to Dallas. (Lone Stars?)
Others:Norsemen,Voyageurs,Blades,Mustangs,Muskies,Lumberjacks,
Miners,Mallards,Pioneers,Polers,Marauders.
Detroit Red Wings-Victoria Cougars moved to Detroit. After 3 seasons,
team officials changed to Falcons at insistence of fans. James Norris,
who played on a Montreal team-Next message->
Edmonton Oilers-(WHA) Alberta Oilers because the region produces most of
Canada's oil. Renamed in second season to Edmonton Oilers. Kept name when
moving to NHL.
Los Angeles Kings-Jack Kent Cooke named them the Kings via executive
decision,giving no reason.
Mighty Ducks of Anaheim-Michael Eisner named the Disney owned team after
the hit movie "The Mighty Ducks." Arena named The Pond,
where duck calls are blown. Some say selected for marketing.
St.Louis Blues-Owner Sid Salomon didn't like Apollo or Mercury,so he named
them the Blues.
San Jose Sharks-5,000 entries, officials picked Sharks. 7 varieties in
Pacific Ocean, several shark research facilities in area. One part of Bay
Area known as Red Triangle due to sharks. Others:Breakers,
Breeze,Condros,Fog,Gold,Golden Gaters,Golden Skaters,Grizzlies,
Icebreakers,Knights,Redwoods,Sea Lions,and Waves.
Toronto Maple Leafs-When Conn Smythe bought Toronto St.Patricks,
his first act was to rename them, He named them after the Maple Leaf
Regiment of World War 1,and the maple leaf on Canada's flag.
Orginally, they were the arenas, then they were renamed the
St.Patricks,supposedly to attract the Irish.
Vancouver Canucks-The nickname was taken from a Canadian folk hero. The
legend says Johnny Canuck was a great logger, and a skater and hockey
player in his spare time.
Winnipeg Jets-Owner Ben Hatskin,a friend of then-NY Jets football co-owner
Sonny Werblin, named his team after his friend'steam.
I hope that this helps. I've heard a variation on the Vancouver
Canucks, but most of these should be true.

From Les Canadiens Magazine, Magazine 6 - 1991-1992 Season:
Bosotn Bruins - A bear-like nickname combining notions of speed and strength.
Buffalo Sabres - The management held a contest and chose Sabres.
Calgary Flames - Given to the team when it was in Atlanta to commemorate the
burning of the city in the Civil War.
Chicago Blackhawks - Original owner Frederic McLaughlin named the team in
honor of the Black Hawk Battalion he served in WWI. The
team's name was merged several years ago.
Detroit Red Wings - Then team president James Norriss named it in honor of a
team he had played with - the Montreal Winged Wheelers.
Edmonton Oilers - The management held a contest and chose Oilers, reflecting
the importance of the oil industry.
Hartford Whalers - Hartford first joined the old WHA, and the 1rst 3 letters
in the name of the team were the league's initials.
Los Angeles Kings - The management held a contest and chose Kings.
Montreal Canadiens - Representing the nationality of the players on the team.
Originally the team had only French Canadian players.
New Jersey Devils - Comes from a legend. A witch gave birth to a demon known
as the "Jersey Devil" in 1735.
New York Islanders - The team is based in Uniondale, Long Island.
New York Rangers - MSG boxing promoter and team owner Tex Rickard used to call
his boys Tex's Rangers, and the name stuck.
Ottawa Senators - In honor of the old Ottawa Senators hockey team that won 6
Stanley Cups.
Philadelphia Flyers - The management held a contest and chose Flyers.
Pittsburgh Penguins - The management held a contest and chose Penguins, partly
because the team is in PENsylvania.
Quebec Nordiques - The team is one of the most northerly NHL franchises.
St. Louis Blues - Then owener Sid Salamon Jr drew inspiration from the famous
song by WC Handy.
San Jose Sharks - The management held a contest and chose Sharks.
Toronto Maple Leafs - Then owner Conn Smythe drew inspiration from an old
Toronto team called the East Maple Leaves.
Vancouver Canucks - Canuck is an old nickname for a Canadian.
Washington Capitals - DC is the Capital of the US.
Winnipeg Jets - Then owner Ben Hatskin asked his pal Sonny Werblin, then owner
of the NFL's New York Jets for permission.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is nothing written on the remaining 4 teams, but I'll take a shot at it:
Dallas Stars - Dallas is in Texas, the Lone STAR state.
Anaheim Mighty Ducks - Disney CEO Michael Eisner named the team after the
Disney movie - the Mighty Ducks.
Tampa Bay Lightning - Tampa Bay is famous for its thunderstorms.
Florida Panthers - You got me, I can't remember.
Perhaps this should put in the FAQ?

The Pittsburgh Civic Arena is nicknamed "The Igloo" because of its shape.

And the old team was probably named after the members of Canada's upper

Or, Stars is a contraction of North Stars. The team was moving toward the
official contraction before it relocated from Minnesota.

The Florida Panther is a native endangered wildcat of Florida.

Somewhere I heard that the owner's wife thought the name "Penguins"
was cute and . . .
: Quebec Nordiques-Committee named them Nordiques (Then WHA) because they
: were the Northernmost team in pro hockey at 52N,72W.
There's got to be a more accurate explanation than this - Quebec City is
only at about 47 degrees north (yes, south of most of the Canada-US
border). Both Winnipeg and Edmonton (and Calgary, if you want to go by
the original Alberta Oilers name) are further north than that - Winnipeg
around 50 degrees and Edmonton just shy of 54.
Go Oilers!

>Florida Panthers - You got me, I can't remember.
Panthers are apparently very big in Florida. I believe a contest was
held as well, and Panthers was a very popular choice. It's an endangered
species as well, I believe. Then again, what isn't nowadays?
The Dallas Franchise orgionally came from Minnesota. At one time they
were known as the North Stars. The team ownership wanted to goon the
state into building a new arena for the team and made some noises about
moving the team. The year before he moved, he changed the name of the
team, dropping the North, as well as the color scheme. (If I remember
correctly, this happened the year after they had won the cup)
>Anaheim Mighty Ducks - Disney CEO Michael Eisner named the team after the
> Disney movie - the Mighty Ducks.
When the team was first announced, they had picked the same sweaters
from the film. There was such an uproar about the ugly sweaters, they
drew up new ones, which were also used in the second film.
>Tampa Bay Lightning - Tampa Bay is famous for its thunderstorms.

You don't remember much correctly, then: the frnachise came into the league
as the Minnesota North Stars in the 1967-68 season, and the team name came
from the state motto of Minnesota -- L'Etoile du Nord, the Star of the North.
Norm Green tried jacking the city of Bloomington around on a new arena, but he
never changed the name -- it was always North Stars. The new logo just didn't
emphasize the "North" part, and the colors weren't changed, because the team
had had black trim in its color scheme for some time before Green ever got his
hands on the team. Finally, just when *did* the North Stars win the Cup,
anyway? No one up in Minnesota, much less down here in Texas, can seem to
find a record of that occurrence...

Also, they were originally the New England Whalers (were they Boston
Whalers before that?) Whaling was a major industry off the
Massachusetts coast a century or two ago.
>Ottawa Senators - In honor of the old Ottawa Senators hockey team that won 6

And the old club's name probably had to do with Ottawa being Canada's
capital (see baseball's Washington Senators).

Previously the Minnesota North Stars due to its northerly (for the US)
location. The North disappeared when they moved.
>Florida Panthers - You got me, I can't remember.
In honor of an endangered species native to South Florida.

This was just last year. Minnesota niether changed their name nor won a Cup.
Actually, I'm pretty sure he did change the name the year before. I remember
the radio announcer always saying "north" before their name and having to
correct himself whenever we played them.
They did not, however win The Cup. They made it to the finals but did not win.
