I found out today that Dennis Murphy is only the Vice-President of the
Global Hockey League; the President is Michael Gobuty, originally from
Winnipeg and who fled to Toronto under a hail of debt and scandal over
the failure of the family garment business.
Gobuty is being sued by the banks in Toronto for a C$1 Million loan
that Harold Ballard co-signed; Pal Hal is also named in the suit.
Gobuty was involved in the second or third set of public Trustees for
the WHA Winnipeg Jets (who were community owned at one time) and there
were accusations that he was skimming from the funds while in his
executive position. No prosecution was ever put forward.
Gobuty lived high, and did so under a set of heavy loans that were
collateralled by his family business, founded and taken over again by
his dad after the receivers took charge it; after that, he promptly
left town.
This guy has a knack for using other people's money, so I'm sure
that's why Ottawa's Dennis Edwards (?) (who finds European spots for
Canadian hockey players) refuses to introduce the GHL crew to some
Germans, Swiss and Austrians who have wanted to start an EHL over
in Europe. Also, the Swedes and Finns are decidedly negative on
foreign ownership of sports teams on their soil.
Not that the NHL owners are any better at times, but what we have here
is a set of really sleazy hustlers. Murphy recently said in a New
York Newsday article that the GHL will be a first class league;
already, the executives of this non-league "travel first class, stay
in first class hotels, and eat first-class". If I were investing, I'd
wonder whose tab I'll be covering tonight.
