Hey David (an obvious hockey newbie),

Does ignorance run rampant overt there on the 49's campus or what?

Did you ever think that it wouldn't even matter had he not come here
in the first place?

Would you be into hockey if it were not for Wayne and Walter Gretzky?

Would your school have it's little suck-ass extramural team if it were
not for Gretz?

Your statement proves to quite ignorant. Why would you boo the
greatest athlete to have played the sport?

Pull your head out of the sand and look at the big picture for a
change and not your selfish ignorance for a change.

Hockey is Gretzky and vice versa.

Good question. I'd like to add, do you think you would be sitting at
Arrowhead Pond watching a hockey game if it weren't for Gretzky? After living
in the LA and SF Bay areas for many years (and being a hockey fan for much
longer), I believe Gretzky's trade to LA was a driving force in increasing
interest in hockey in California. There were already hockey fans here, of
course, but the interest really took off. And after that, San Jose and Anaheim
got franchises.

I sincerely hope the Kings can continue to be a good team. They're
floundering right now.

The Sharks, and your Mighty Ducks, AND THEIR FANS, should thank Gretzky, not
boo him.

I watched that Kings-St. Louis game on Sunday night and was thoroughly
disgusted with the cold reception that Gretzky got. That was about as
uncalled for a reception as I've ever seen. We've been fortunate to watch
one of the truly all time great players play, one of the league's
classiest individuals and he gets booed every time he touches the puck.
I'm sorry, but that was wrong.

Teams are no longer loyal to any one player, so why should a player be
loyal to his team. Especially when you look at the team the Kings put
on the ice.

Gretzky need only be loyal to his family, wife and friends.

the team was not looking after his wants and or needs. It is each
persons own responsibilty to do that.

Look at who's saying get a life. Gretzky has done more for this sport
than anyone. His worth to the NHL far overshadows what he makes. If it
wasn't for him, there would be no Anaheim or San Jose. Without his play
throughout the years there would be less road game sellouts for teams
where L.A had played. The G W Forum would have had in and around 10,000
fans per home game throughout all of the years had he NOT been traded to
L.A. (the same that they had before his departure). Wayne Gretzky has
been nothing but a blessing to a league known more for it's goonism than
it's grace. Granted, I enjoy a good tussle every now and then, but it's
nice to have a player like Wayne Gretzky to balance things out.

I have the utmost respect for Gretzky's career so don't get me wrong
but...

He deserved everything he got.

He quit on the team and city that he promised to bring a Stanley Cup.
Not only that, but in a extremely cowardly fashion. He played a major
role in engineering those trades that brought all his buddies along when
they were past their primes.

As far as Anaheim not having a team without Gretzky's presence on the
west coast? Doesn't impress me. That team's really there because a
convicted crook got some quick Disney cash to try to keep his sinking
dirty ship afloat. If there was a team entitled to a discounted $25
million entrance fee, it would have been Hamilton. Unfortunately,
Hamilton didn't have some status-climbing wannabe who could con an
entire league blind. If Disney is determined to stay in the sports
business (which they seem to be), they'll do a much better job of
entrenching hockey on the west coast than Wayne and his ego ever could.

It would not have hurt Wayne one bit to publicly say that he's up there
in age and, realizing his financial partner is broke and should be in
jail soon, maybe it's time to move on. Instead, he hid in the background
and took the entire team down for a half season with his dawdling.

I don't care how big a "star" anybody is. When you quit on your team
without any provocation, you are entitled to nothing short of scorn and
ridicule.

At least Larry Robinson and Sam McMaster will truly get a chance to
build a competitive organization. If no-one wants to see it, move it.
Lots of cities will gladly take the team.

Geez, I didn't see the Whiner at the local arena. Give it up. The star of the
local hockey team puts his sweater in just like Wayne does. He also floats in
the neutral zone, and blows his team's defense like Wayne does. The squad might
have won their last playoff games if the star hadn't learned how not to play

Give it a rest.

And Gretzky is responsible for all of that? I suggest you open your eyes
and see that other people (and not Gretzky are responsible) for the changes
that have happened in Hockey. Speaking of goonism, I seem to remember
one Dave Semenko... Gretzky's personal goon.

And what... the rest of the players in the league are goons? Geez...
Gretzky was a good player, but let's not lose touch with reality here.

What you're forgeting in this whole "Gretzky pumped up California hockey..."
debate is the role Mr. Bruce McNall played.

Answer these questions:
***********************

Who was the mastermind in bringing Wayne Gretzky to Los Angeles in the first
place?

Despite the added fans coming to see Gretzky at the Forum, who brought "Show
Time" to the LA Forum hockey games and dumped the purple and gold uniforms?

Who INTRODUCED Pro hockey to Michael Eisner (Disney) and Wayne Hizynga,
the Florida (Blockbuster) Millionare as a financial tool? (Hint, it wasn't
Wayne.)

Who, after a short relationship with the NHL's top Brass Bullshitted his
way onto being president of the NHL Board of Governors?

ANSWER: Bruce McNall. Despite being later found to be a phony, McNall
was an excellent salesman, especially selling himself and his passion that
ice hockey did have a place in Southern California.

In order, the best things that have happened to increase popularity of hockey in
California are:

1- Rollerblades! (That's a cold hard fact!)
2- Bruce McNall (A phony BS'er, but he played the role so well..)
3- Wayne Gretzky (Most in '88 responded to the trade:"What's a Gretzky?.."
4- Michael Eisner.
5- Marcel Dionne (Kept the pulse beating when the Kings stood alone in Ca.)

A local TV station publicized in November that Rick Ley would be fired and
Pat Quinn would return at the coach of the Canucks. It happened today.
The Canucks have been slumping badly as of late and the expected BIG trade
at the deadline never happened. The local rumour mills were active on Tuesday -
with the word on the street being that Ley would be fired if they lost.
The games was against the kings and they won.
Last night they placed miserably in a ``4 point game'' against Toronto.
With the loss they slipped to 6th place - and are only a single point
ahead of 7th. On Saturday after a miserable loss to the Flames, the ice was
littered with garbage from the fans. The only thing that saved them from
that last night was the fact that there are so many native Ontarioans here
that in the average Vancouver-Toronto game GM place is 1/2 leaf fans.

Oh well....

So add Rick Ley to the ever growing list of coaches canned this year and
judging by local callin shows, Canuck supporters should be added to
the list of fans who are too happy to show the coach the door.

There has been no evedence that Hamilton would do a good job *supporting*
a cash-sucking machine called an NHL franchise. Why put a big league franchise
there, only to move it to Atlanta, Nashville or Houston later on after it sucks
the life out of southern Ontario?

So Hamilton has a nice arena, BFD.

Rollerblades have had a bigger impact on spreading hockey on the west coast than
Wayne ever did. End of story.

Being from Vancouver I hear a lot of blame against Ley for this years
lack of success but hell the Canucks are in the same position they were
last year going into the playoffs...

I think most Canuck fans have expected far too much from their team this
year... I thought they would be better too but with the terrible defense
that hasn't being corrected all year and the loss of Bure the Canucks
are actually a worse team then last year...

Is that Ley's fault?

As an aside Canuck's fans are totally unclassy when they litter the
ice with garbage... it makes me ashamed that I live in the same city
as most of these trash throwing goofs.

You lose a game deal with it... don't litter the ice with crap and
become obnoxious because the gold is coming off your beloved team.
