Here's a question for someone with a Gretzky stats book or a great memory:
How many goals did he get in pee-wee? Someone quoted the figure of 375 to me.
Is this right? Please include information about how many games he played and
whether the total is for one or two seasons and how old he was in pee-wee. I
think he must have been at least a couple of years younger than the other
players.

A friend has been arguing that this figure can't be right because the
average pee-wee player gets about 20 games in a year and since he proabably only
played one year in pee-wee then he would have had to average 19 goals a game.
No doubt this is physically possible for Wayne, but wouldn't his coach or dad or
he himself tell him to let up after say 18...or wouldn't a guy scoring this many
be instantly promoted to the next level. Maybe he was too small for the next
level? Any insight into this would also be appreciated.

Just wondering.

In "Wayne Gretzky" by Romain and Duplacey says that at age 10, Wayne had
378 goals for the Nadrofsky Steelers in an 85 game season. He broke the
record by a 238 goals.

Best wishes,

The Hockey News recently published a year-by-year breakdown
of the number of goals Gretzky scored at each level of hockey.
It didn't include the number of games, but here are his goal
totals for his pre-NHL years:
Gretzky's
Year Team (League) Goals age
---------------------------------------------------------------
1967-68 Brantford Nadrofsky (Novice) 1 6
1968-69 Brantford Nadrofsky (Novice) 27 7
1969-70 Brantford Nadrofsky (Novice) 104 8
1970-71 Brantford Nadrofsky (Novice) 196 9
1971-72 Brantford Nadrofsky (Novice) 378 10
1972-73 Brantford Turkstra (Pee wee) 105 11
1973-74 Brantford Turkstra (Pee wee) 196 12
1974-75 Brantford Charkon (Bantam) 90 13
1975-76 Toronto Seneca Nats (Jr. B) 27 14
1976-77 Toronto Seneca Nats (Jr. B) 36 15
1977-78 Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHA) 70 16
1978-79 Indianapolis/Edmonton (WHA) 46 17 (1st year pro)
1979-80 Edmonton Oilers (NHL) 51 18 (1st NHL year)
.....
---------------------------------------------------------------

Gretzky played 3 games for the Peterborough Petes (OHA) in November
of 1976 when they called him up from the Nats. The Petes remain the
only team for which Gretzky has played and never scored a goal.
In Gretzky's only full year in junior with the Greyhounds, he came
second in scoring (at 16 years old) to Bobby Smith of the Ottawa 67s
with 182 points. He won rookie of the year in the OHL. Apparently,
Gretzky was only 5'8" tall and 130 pounds at the time.

According to The Hockey News, Gretzky scored 378 goals with Brantford
Nadrofsky in 1971-2, when he would have been 10 at the start of the season and
turned 11 during it. This was novice, not pee-wee, hockey, which he would
begin the next year. I don't know offhand if 11 is old for novice or not.
I don't know how many games he played, but this includes all playoff and
tournament games in a ddition to reg. season, and as Gretzky was already making
a name for himself then he probably played in many tourneys.

Hope this helps.

Tell that to Gordie Howe! He seems to think that every goal you
get your whole life count as NHL goals!

I haven't got my record book with me, so this is all off the top of my noodle.
He did score about that many in approx. 50(?) games for the Brantford Pee-Wee
Allstars. He was 11. Same age as everyone else. The book that I have (NHL 75th
Anniversary) has a list of all the games and goals he scored. It is, in one
word, unfucking believable. I'll try and post specifics tomorrow.
