I've heard this song a couple of times the last few weeks, and
*think* it's about hockey (probably about some famous hockey
player from the past).
Who can fill me in? (My knowledge of hockey history is limited,
I've only been following this game for about 3 years...)
Thanks,
Erikk

Hey, where did my signature go?!
The song is about Bill Barilko who was a member of four Stanley Cup winning
Toronto teams in his five years from 1946-1951. I don't have the CD here at
work, but the lyrics concerning Barilko go something like:
Bill Barilko disappeared that Summer
He was on a fishing trip
The last goal he ever scored won the Leafs the Cup
They didn't win another 'til 1962--
The year he was discovered.
I stole this from a hockey card
I keep tucked under,
My Fifty Mission Cap.
blah blah blah...
He played all of five seasons in the NHL before he died, (all with the Leafs),
and recorded these stats (from the Guide and Record Book '92-'93):
Regular Season Playoffs
GP G A PTS PIM GP G A PTS PIM
=== === === === === == === === === ===
252 26 36 62 456 47 5 7 12 104
And yes, the Leafs won the Cup in 1951 and didn't win again until 1962, but
I have no idea of the validity of the body finding story, but I'm gullible
enough to think it's true. Makes a good story, anyway...
Later,
Me

Yes they found the plane in the bush and Barilko was identified by the
watch he was wearing. Bill Barilko was remembered as one hell of a
body-checker in an era before body-checking meant creaming someone
against the boards.
cordially, as always,
