I was reading in _INSIDE HOCKEY_ that the Leafs have been
actively pursuing Dave Manson of the Oilers. Edmontion is
allegedly interested in trading him and it is indicated in the
article(by Bob Mackenzie?) that any trade by the Leafs would
most likely include defenseman Dave Ellett.

Now, I haven't watched Manson play very much, but isn't Dave
Ellett he better player? If a trade were to be made between
to two teams (for those players) do you tink it would be an
even trade? Which team do you think would get the "larger"
package?

The article also said that the Leafs are trying to sign Joe
Mullen of Pittsburgh -- I'm looking forward to a heck of a
year from my boys in blue!

Edmonton isn't particularly interested in trading him...they
just don't particularly like what they are going to have to
pay him...thus if the right offer came along...they would
consider trading him...

It is more likely that one of Tikkanen or Damphousse will
be traded to free up salary for Manson...as next to Ranford,
Manson is about the next most irreplacable Oiler, since he
makes it possible for their smaller defensemen like MacIver
and Hawgood to be effective.

Manson is a complete defenseman in that he comes with the
full physical dimension to the game. Ellett is a better
offensive defenseman...he's not going to scare anyone though.

Edmonton would want more than Ellett because Manson is
significantly younger...the Oilers might bite for Ellett and
Pearson...for example...but I can't imagine the Leafs parting
with Pearson.
