I write sports for the Silent News, a national publication
covering the American deaf community. I also publish
DEAFSPORTZINE which is a weekly email newsletter about the deaf
in sports.
I am always looking for deaf athletes in all sports that I
could write about. Do you know of any of them in field hockey?
While the degrees of deafness vary, I am only interested in
athletes deaf in both ears, not those deaf in just one ear.
If you don't know of any, then thank you for bearing with
me.

The deaf & dumb player who is in the Doncaster squad is Gursharn Nijjar.
He has played regularly in the English National League and for
Lincolnshire and the East Divisional Side. Like Mike, I umpired him on
many occasions and was amazed at the way he played at this level. His
coach Mike Catterall developed a series of signals to help with tactics
and he relied on the reactions of other players when responding to an
umpiring decision.
Incidentally - having taken a break from umpiring this season - I'm
enjoying playing for Tynemouth in the NPL. Well worth returning to
playing after 10 seasons as an umpire!

Don't know the guy personally but apparently theres a guy playing National
league for Doncaster who is deaf. Anybody else here know his name or extent of
his deafness?
just wondering if there are any chance of putting together a deaf
representative side made up of all the best deaf hockey players in the
UK??? If so I would be keen to try out!!
As I recall the boy played in the forwards (maybe CF) and developed quite
good skills. He appeared to be acutely aware of other players' reactions to
the umpires' whistles and so would react himself accordingly. Occasionally
he would continue to play after the whistle had been blown however everyone
understood having been previously put in the know and no one appeared to
make a fuss. I can't say that I've noticed him lately.

I refereed a boy of about 12 once, who was allmost deaf (It wasn't
quite clear to him when I gave him an official warning). He was from
the foreign team, which I can't remember. It was a while ago too, last
season or something.
