Australian hockey people have been saddened by the news this week when
they learned that a talented young hockey player died in a bus crash.
The accident occured last Monday, near a notorious stretch of the
Pacific Highway (New South Wales) as his team travelled home from
winning a State hockey championship.

Sixteen-year-old Tim Leneve, of Mittagong, was killed and 14 of his
team-mates were injured.
The crash, on the NSW mid-north coast, occurred at 1.50am when the
mini-bus swerved to avoid hitting a kangaroo.

The 17 people on hoard the bus were returning home after competing in
the three day NSW under-17 boys hockey championships at Lismore in the
north of the State.

Australians are made only too aware of the difficulties faced by
developing athletes in such a vast country. In order to gain high
level competitive experience, promising juniors are forced to travel
vast distances.

We, in the hockey community, wish to express our deepest sympathy to
Tim's family and friends.
