I had a bf 10 years ago or so who sometimes used that phrase about every
other sentence. Almost drove me nuts... then I found myself using it a
lot. Aaaaarggggghh! He wasn't a teenager either, around 42 at the time.

I try to never use those two words together unless they are followed by a
query. For instance "I was standing under a lamp post, you know the
kind.....such-n-such". I am sure that I do use them alone occasionally,
when I am not really thinking, but I know what you mean. I hate talking to
some one who uses it twice a sentence. Ex: "I was like going, you know,
down the road to the, you know, store, and I saw this ho (woman who sales
sexual services), you know.....etc."

That's what happens when you interview someone before they can catch
their breath. But in a larger sense, the increased use of the term
arises because we have created communication that is faster than the
ability to organize thoughts. We have to say things when we are unsure
of any synchronicity with the party we are trying to communicate with.
Thus, the person talking will have to say, "You know?," to keep
themselves in check before the conversation can ramble into confusion.
