Hey, I need to know how deep the hole on the green is supposed to be, and
also how far below the green surface can the cup be? I'm going to be
changing pins at the course, every 7- 10 days in exchange for free golf and
driving range priviliges,(sweet). Also, is it 4 paces minimum from the
fringe area?

From Appendix to the Rules of Golf
Hole

The "hole" shall be 4¼ inches (108 mm) in diameter and at
least 4 inches (100 mm) deep. If a lining is used, it shall be
sunk at least 1 inch (25 mm) below the putting green surface
unless the nature of the soil makes it impracticable to do so;
its outer diameter shall not exceed 4¼ inches (108 mm).

Can't find anywhere that states a minimum distance from green's
edge. Ask the greenskeeper.

The USGA in "How To Conduct a Competition" recommends five paces.

Q: What is the minimum distance between the edge of the green and the
flagstick according to USGA rules?

Michele Carter, Snellville, GA - Saturday, January 6, 2001 at 20:03:54

A: There is nothing in the Rules of Golf" that tells us a minimum distance
from the green edge for a hole location. However, the USGA recommends that
the hole be positioned "if possible, at least five paces away from the edge
of the putting green." Each committee or greenkeeper should use this as a
guideline, but it is not a Rule. GR.

I believe the general recommendation is for three paces (metres) minimum
from the fringe, but you'd be safe if you used four. BTW, find a spot
that has about a yard (metre) or so of fairly even (not necessarily
flat) ground around the hole. Don't under any circumstances put the
holes on an impossible slope, on top of a sharp ridge or in a distinct
hollow. That is unless you want to incur the wrath of nearly every
player on the course. ;-)

John,

Which course gave you this cushy deal?

Mark

Bogie Buster's in Georgetown, KY. Not a great course, but hey you still
have to golf your ball. :)

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen a hole on an impossible
slope, on top of a sharp ridge, or in a distinct hollow, I'd be able
to buy a course and specify hole placements myself!
Sheesh.
I play the WIGC: Wrath Incurring Golf Course, regularly.

Who is going to complain if the hole is in a distinct hollow? I'd like
to see that _just once_, to make up for all the times I've seen it on a
slight hump (probably because the guy making the hole didn't do it quite
right and created the hump)

If nothing else I'd like to see it just to erase my memory of the
nightmarish 9th green at Kingsbarns (Scotland)
