I recently got some graphite woods and have seen these things you put in your
bag that are basically a furry tube to protect your shafts. My question is
this, do they need that much more protection and what is the best way to go
about it if so?

Thanks,

You don't need graphite shaft protectors unless you want to preserve the
beauty of the club since the shaft still funtions properly.

Absolutely wrong, Bob. Far more than cosmetic appearance is involved.

Unlike steel, graphite shafts wear when they rub against the sides of the bag.
I had two graphite shafts develop grooves within a year where they touched
the side of the bag, and eventually they both broke at that point. I have since
learned my lesson. Unless you protect the shaft from wear, they will eventually
break at the point where they come in contact with the bag. I would guess that the
shaft also loses its resistance to torque at the point where the shaft becomes thinner,
leading to a gradual loss of control before the catastrophic twist that breaks the
shaft.

Re-graphite- I hvae a brand new tube bag but also recently bought a graphite
driver. I lined the "driver" tube and top with soft polypropolene(sp?) to
protect the club. Thi grip fits snugly but the shaft stays pretty straight
in the tube. I hope I am OK here as I love my new driver. If you've any other
advice, please post or E-mail thanks.
