Hello,

i am planning to try out a set of iron clones (from gigagolf.com). You often
read (e.g. in this group), that some clones work perfect, others not.

Maybe you can help an tell me what to go for / avoid:

1. Turbo Power V-91 (Nike Slingshot)
2. Steel Plus XL 6 / Acer XP / VS 88 II (all Callaway X-16)
3. Turbo Power PFD (Callaway Hawk Eye VFT)
4. Z Tour 3 (Ping I3+)

Experiences?

Thanks in advance, regards
Torben

Well, you've opened that can of worms again! Clones vs. high $$ irons.
Several of your choices listed above are actually made by the same foundry
but stamped for the company that sells them. No difference. The V91's are
a very good iron set. But you might also want to consider the grip and
shaft.

look at the iron heads available in this site. some might closely
resemble the Callaway X-16s.

I know ;)

Have you played them? There are also the Synchron Medic Irons, which have
very good reviews. I am not sure which are better...

Why would you want to buy a club just because it looks like another
club? Just buy a good set of component clubs (KSG, Snake Eyes) and
don't worry what they look like. Anyone who knows golf well enough to
know what a Nike Slingshot looks like will know your clubs are fake
anyway.

It is not the looks. In my local stores you only get the chance to play the
brand sticks, so it is more a question of comparability regarding
performance and feel.

Then again, they did cost one third...

But just because they look the same does NOT mean that they are
the same. So playing a name brand club means virtually nothing
if you choose a lookalike from a different manufacture. The
Slingshot lookalikes may have a little flying bowtie thingy on
the back, but have entirely different weight distributions,
materials, balance, tolerances to the Nikes. And the same with
all the other clones.

Then again, the lookalikes may be great - you just don't know
until you hit them. As others have pointed out, there are the
serious component manufacturers who make quality products, but
spend less on marketing, and don't particularly look like a big
name brand club. They are probably the best value, and you won't
get "that look" at a snooty club for playing clones - you'll be
playing good components. Of course, any decently snooty club
will still give you "that look" for going cheap. I know, I get
it every time I drive my car into one of those clubs....

I'd say a set of X-14's off ebay would be cheaper and as good as any of the
above options.

The problem is that such clubs will hardly be fitted.

Why yes. It comes from the Golf Channel. Is often repeated. I believe the
show is titled "What's in the bag?" They have shown the foundries
in Taiwan where the brand name heads are made as well as the clones. They
have also gone to the far east and shown how True Temper shafts are made.
TT admitted that some of their graphite shafts are made for club makers with
the club maker logo on them. No credit given to TT for the shaft. I'm not
certain, but I don't think they have been to the foundries in China. But
like most clones/copies, there is some cosmetic differences so that there
are no lawsuits. You might remember Cobra was after the foundry that was
churning out the "King Snake" head. Now it's just labeled "KS". One of our
clubmakers in this area has a letter from Callaway saying to cease and
desist. The clubmaker works out of a 700 sq. ft. shack and sells Turbo
Power X6 heads (X16).

Not at all, there are so many sets available on ebay that you can pick one
out that meets your specs. This is especially true with Pings.

As well, most any set of irons can be lie adjusted 2* either way for minimal
cost.

I have the Z Tour 3 and think they are great. But, I followed
the suggestions of the group and hit a bunch of different
clubs before I bought them.

Aye, and that's the rub.

There's no real way to tell which one work. I've played with guys who
have had clones some of them really liked them, some thought they
could have bought better clubs at walmart.

For a beginner, I would say clones are probably a very good choice.
However, If you've been playing for awhile, you probably know what
kind of club you are looking for. If you are living near a major city
you can demo any of the major brands and narrow your search even
furter.

When I was looking for new Irons, I considered clones and a friend
said to me, "Sheila, you work hard at what you do, you deserve the
very best". He was right. I bought the OEM clubs and have been very
happy with them.

Hit em straight,
Sheila

I bought a set of X-16-alikes from these guys:
http://stores.ebay.com/PACIFIC-GOLF-CENTER-STORE

"Custom" fitted (they send you a lengthy questionnaire about your
game). Very good customer service, and I really liked hitting them (the
clubs, not customer service).

They were good enough for me to break 80 a bunch of times. I've never
hit genuine X-16s, so I can't give you a direct comparison, but these
definitely played better than my older set of Callaway irons.

BTW, I also bought a set of their GBB II-alike woods, but they were
less impressive.
