I just read a post talking about using gasoline to put on grips. I wouldn't
recommend it. Gasoline contains a lot of heavy organic compounds that leave
a residue. Ever notice how hard it is to wash the smell of gasoline off your
hands? Your grips will smell like gasoline for a very long time if you use
this approach.

Lighter fluid is much better. It evaporates quickly, completely, and cleanly.
A lot fewer carcinogens than gasoline, too.

Just curious, but why so much interest in alternative grip
solvents? The stuff GolfSmith, GolfWorks, etc. sell at about
$5/can works great, lasts forever, is not extremely flammable,
and smells considerably better than any of the alternatives. Why
would you want to use Gasoline, lighter fluid, WD40, industrial
cleaners, etc.?

gasoline?wd40?10w40?nitroglycerine? fish glue? what are y'all doing?
are we changing grips or building bombs????

your best bet is odorless min spirits cheap and effective.

or use new 3M tape which is water/soap activated.

by the way gasoline is an acceptable way if you dont mind the smell,
vast reduction in grip life and possibility of cancer in the hands,
oh and please dont smoke while you are playing.

Lighter fluid does work, however, I have found it to be VERY hard on
my skin, burning and itching. From my experience in my golf store, and
having tried EVERY possible method of grip installation to cut costs,
I have found that Paint thinner is the easiest solvent as well as the
cheapest.

Try it

I smoke and use petrol (I'm British!) for my grips.

Also use it to (a) remove labels from old disks (b) wash my hands after
painting and (c) for my cigar lighter!

I blame the scientists - nobody died of cancer from smoking until the
scientists said that it caused it.

One old biologist I knew and who smoked and died of cancer always maintained
that the research only showed that the people who died of cancer were more
likely to smoke and there was no evidence whatsoever that the likelihood of
smoking causing cancer was any greater than that of cancer causing smoking.

Another "solvent" to add to your list for installing grips - WD40. Very
slippery and a can lasts a long time.
