I was told when I bought the things that JZ shafts are "regular flex".
My previous clubs were inexpensive graphite shafted clubs (which broke).
In comparison, the new irons have a very solid feel when I hit the ball,
and a solid "clunk" on impact. I suspect (but I'm not sure) that I've also
lost some hitting distance with these new clubs.
Can anyone comment on shaft stiffness? Is it possible/advisable to get
these clubs re-shafted? Would it make much difference?

Does anyone have experience with this shaft? How does the W54 compare to
the Karsten 101? Are G Loomis shafts as good as Aldila? For reference, I
hit a 5 iron about 155 yards.
Thanks in advance.

Dave:
The Ping website at www.pinggolf.com has all the information you need on
Ping shafts, including the JZ. I recently bought a set of irons and went
through
the fitting procedure. JZ shafts were recommended. I thought they felt a
little
stiff compared to my previous clubs, but they are regular flex and seem to
work
just fine. I felt like I was not getting a lot of distance from mine, but
I found that
tightening my grip seemed to help.
If you have an average swing speed (approx 75-85 mph for a 5 iron), the JZ
shafts
should be just fine. Many have complained that they feel a little harsh,
and you
may wish to consider going with a different shaft just for better feel.
Good luck.

I went and got a lesson. The pro noticed that I was "letting go" of the
club
with my left hand at the top of my backswing. As a drill, he had me hold
a tee between the grip and the heel of my hand. It solved my distance
problem.

G Loomis is Aldila's premium brand, so to speak. Aldila owns Loomis. The
Loomis engineering staff is as good as they come.
BTW, what caused the failure of the original iron shafts?

Ping has the feeling that stiff is for everyone. My 5 iron swing
speed with 1" over is 69-70 mph. I'm re-shafting with Brunswick Rifle
shafts (5.5).
The Pings olso take a tapered shaft, so your selection is limited.
More important then the shaft stiffness is the length and you can only
find that out with a lie board or put masking tape on the bottom of
your 5 iron next time at the range and check where the tears are.
If you purchased your eye 2's several years ago the lies where few.
Ping has added white, siver and maroon in the uprights. Also the
sweet spot on the pings is a little more towards the hosel then then
center. Check this by lightly gripping the grip between 2 fingers and
take ball and tap the club face to see where the head just bounces
instead of twisting.
Of course they also added flatter lies as well. The heads may be
adjusted up or down an easy 2 degrees (or 2 colors). If you do have
the lie adjusted I suggest you re paint the dots to reflect what lie
they are.
