From what I understand you need to use a special knife so that you
don't score the shaft. If you scrape it you ruin it. Do like me pay
the 4 bucks...
No special knife needed. Just rip off the old grip and re-grip as usual. There is no
reason that you should be in any position to damage the shaft.
The whole process for regripping a graphite shafted
club is really no different than normal. However,
take care when you cut the grip away. If you make
any type of small cut into the shaft it could cause
the graphite fibers to begin to unwind over time.
What I did was make a small cut at the bottom of the
grip with a pair of scissors and then ripped the
grip off with my hands. Getting tape off is a bit
harder and you should really just take you time. I
would not try to scrape it off with a knife or anything
like that for fear of damaging the shaft.
Take your time and you will have no problems.
By the way, I saw that your address was from UVA, how
is Birdwood these days? I haven't played there in a
while.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I had mine re-gripped
professionally once, last year. This year I cut those off only to find
they had scored the shaft the last time. I use an X-acto knife to cut
off my grips (steel and graphite shafts). On the woods (graphite) I
just turn the blade the other way, so it's facing outward, toward the
rubber. You'll probably do a much better job than a "pro".
