I just purchased a used 8813 and I love it.

However, can someone describe for me the difference between a Wilson 8802
and 8813 putters? Were there ever 8801 or 8803-8812 putters?

The most obvious differences between the 8813 and 8802 putters are that
the 8813 has perpendicular markings on the topline and backside of the
blade to help visually line up the face with the ball, while the 8802 has
no such markings. It's interesting to note that the topline marking has NO
relationship to the blade's sweetspot, which seems to run closer to the
heel. Here's a quote from PETERSEN'S GOLFING magazine, Feb. '95;
Collector's Corner, The Wilson 8802 Putter:
''While considered a classic, the 8802 was not originally designed as a
pro-line model. Rather, the 8802 was the store-line version of the Wilson
8813. Initially, the 8802 was stamped 'designed by Arnold Palmer' and bore
no identifying number. When Palmer's contract with Wilson expired, the
company removed his name from the store-line version of the 8813 and
stamped '8802' on the sole of the putter. The 8813 was considered the
pro-line model and, as such, bore the Wilson Staff shield and had markings
that differed from the 8802. Interestingly, the 8802 has never had the
Staff shield stamped on it.''
Ben Crenshaw uses the 8802 (not a ''Palmer Original'' by Peerless, not a
Cleveland version). A few years ago, in an advisory capacity, he suggested
that Wilson go back to using the flare-tip shaft and original finish,
which is what you see being sold today. I imagine sales might improve
somewhat due to current events.

The Wilson 8813 putter has two markings that the 8802 putter lacks--one
on top of the blade that is perpendicular to the face, and one back on
the flange that is parallel to the face. I have an 8802 and am so
pleased with the feel (this is the first putter I've kept for longer
than one season! Four in fact!) I'm guessing when I say this, but I
don't think there were ever any 8801, 8803-12 putters.

The only difference between the two is the 8813 has a center line and the
8802 does not. These are the only 2 "classic" models Wilson is selling.
They have reintroduced the 1951, 1969 and 1971 Wilson Staff blades.

Okay, I understand the difference between 8802 and 8813 (I think). Here's
another version to ponder:

At a thrift shop I purchased an old Wilson putter for $2. Other than a
slightly different flange, it looks like the 8802 -- but it has a single
black perpendicular line engraved in the top face at the sweet spot.
"Wilson" is stamped on the bottom, but no model number. Neither the shaft
nor the putterhead is magnetic, leading me to suspect both are an aluminum
alloy of some sort.

The putter has a nice feel, although no putter on earth can make *my* putts
go in!

Any ideas where this one fits in the Wilson family history?

They're pretty similar in design, but one was intended as the "pro shop"
club (the 8813 I believe) and one intended as the "KMart" variety of the
same putter. Strictly marketing although the popularity and value of
the putter is kind of backwards to their original intent.

I posted this earlier, but Crenshaw does, in fact, use the Cleveland
occasionally, and used it to win the Masters this year. Ever since he
broke the shaft on his original 8802 he has gone back and forth between
a lot of similar putters. You could see very clearly in the news photo
taken at 18 the "Designed by" and "Ben Crenshaw" on the bottom of the
putter.

The 8813 has an offset or bent hosel. 8813 also have a line
perpendicular to the line (parallel to the face) etched on
the flange.

I have a 8813 with no lines on the top. It's from the late 60's or early 70's.
