If you really must know....
- Callaway BB War Bird 9 deg. driver, BB WB 3-wood, regular old BB 5-wood
(all firm graphite w/half cord GP Victory grips.)
- Cleveland VAS irons (the purple ones!) 3-9, PW, SW, LW (I also have a 1
and 2 iron and a DW which I don't carry very often. They all still have
the factory grips on'em, but I may regrip with GP Tour Velvet soon.)
- Ping Pal 5KS putter (best putter I've ever had.)
- Callaway carrying bag w/stand and Izzo double shoulder strap
- Virginia Tech logo head covers
- Bag tags: Virginia Tech Golf Course and The Homestead
- Several Titleist golf balls (Professional, HP2 Tour, HP2 depending on
conditions. All 100 compression, since I like for all the writing on the
ball to be black.)
- Black Sharpie marker, to put mark on golf balls
- 3 FJ Weather-Sof gloves
- Tees (white, or the bright orange ones Virginia Tech sells)
- Pitchmark tool
- Extra scorecards & pencils
- Rule book
- Coins to mark ball (my faves: 100 Chinese yen coin, buffalo nickel)
- Sun block (SPF 30)
- Deep Woods "Off" (the gnats in Blacksburg are bloodthirsty)
- Eye drops for my contact lenses
- Old toothbrush (for occasional serious groove cleanings)
- White hand towel, larger club towel, extra towel in bag
- Rain hood for bag
- Umbrella (generic black & white one I got for $15. Works great!)
- Ibuprofen tablets
- Allergy tablets
- Insulated water bottle w/spiffy VT logo (attaches to bag)
- Cheap digital watch (keeps great time)
In the trunk of my car:
- 2 pairs FJ Dry-Joys (size 10.5N, one white, one black)
- Straw hat, several caps
- Wind shirt, sweater vest, rain suit
- Shag bag (full of shag balls!)
- Extra new golf balls
- Extra towels
- Folder full of VT Golf Association stuff (I'm tourney chairman this year)
I think that's about all. Except for what's in my golf closet at home:
- Large Belding golf bag (with VT logo, of course) for riding carts
- Bag tag: Olde Mill GC (play there if you're ever in SW Va)
- A bunch of golf clubs I don't carry - various woods, irons, wedges and
putters, plus a whole set of Pro-Feel (sort of Ping-type) irons. I'd try
to sell the Pro-Feels, except I made a hole-in-one with the 4-iron and I
hate to part with it.
- Cheesy cloth bag (for storing extra clubs)
- Big bag full of golf balls I've played until they were beat up (at least
200 of'em)
- Several dozen new golf balls
- A couple pairs old golf shoes I haven't thrown away
- Several wind shirts & rain jackets
- Numerous hats
- Big bag of tees
- Extra spikes & spike wrench
- Shoe cleaner & rags
- Tape & lighter fluid for regripping
- Whole bunch of golf shirts (they're in my regular closet, though)
And on the bookshelf:
- Golf balls I kept for some reason: my hole-in-one ball, and all my eagle
balls fron the last couple of seasons. Also my hole-in-one certificate and
the newspaper clipping from it.
- Many golf books & magazines
- Tee from Walt Disney World (gift from my brother after his honeymoon.
Gee thanks, I'm overwhelmed.)
I really think that's it. I'll let you know if I forgot something.

Thanks, Bob.
A couple of things....
1. How is the Tour Velvet when wet? (I've heard that the Tour Wrap, while
a great grip dry, is terrible when wet.) I tend to sweat like a stuck pig
in the summer, so this is a major considertion for me. It's one of the
reasons I like the cord grips. (BTW, that also means I can't wear my
glasses for golf if the temp is over about 63 F.)
2. I noticed I didn't mention my putter.
Current favorite: Tech-Line, with midsize grip. Currently doing very
well with it.
Backup, and previous favorite:
Head: Hireko P314, brass, similar to Ping B60.
Shaft: Hireko aluminum putter shaft.
Grip: Midsize (now discontinued) no-name grip.

However this won't be for long. I have some Mizuno Pro Tour wedges on order
and I just started playing around with an old set of Hogan blades and I
really like them.
This is my first time to try blades (I have been playing 3 years) and I
really liked
the feel. While I did have a few mishits, once I settled down and got over the
head games (smaller head size, "smaller sweetspot") I found I really like
the way the blades feel.
One thing I noticed is a greater ability to extract distance. When compared to
my cavity-backs, I found I could hit the blades a club or two farther when
I really
swung hard, even though my cavity-backs have stronger lofts. It was my
impression
that when I swung hard with the cavity-backs, less energy seemed
transferred into
the ball than with the blades. Any one else had that reaction? It was if the
thinner, larger faced cavity backs concentrated less mass right behind the
sweet spot.
The sweet spot may seem larger, but it was "less sweet" than the blades'
smaller spot.
I have been unhappy to find that there is a really poor selection of
forged component
clubheads, both in irons and wedges.

Sounds almost like a Japanese 100 Yen coin, except for the
Cunfucious-type dude (As far as I know, the 100 Yen coin has flowers
on the front). Maybe it IS a Chinese coin? I use a Yen coin as a
ball mark - forgot the denomination, but it's the bronze coloured coin

which my putting hasn't improved but at least my ball mark has
increased in value! Thinking of changing to the new Cdn $2 coin.

The Tour Wrap IS terrible when wet. I now have only two clubs
(driver and 3-wood) that have these grips, and if it is raining or I am
hot and sweaty I have to tee off with my 5-wood. My old set of irons had
these grips and I really had problems in the rain/heat. I now have Tour Wrap
full cords - ouch! I also have sitting in the box a set of Tour Velvet Cords
which I was going to put on the irons I was going to make. Now I am saving
them for regripping, and will put them on my woods when I reshaft them.
Regarding glasses - what do you do? I cannot possibly golf without my
glasses (I would probably be arrested for endangerment!) I spend half the
time in the summer trying to wipe my glasses clean with sweat-soaked hankies
(maybe I just need to carry more of them). In the rain, if I forget to bring
a cap - I have an even worse problem.

how well I am swinging - the Dynacraft blows away the Burner on distance,
but I don't make contact as well or as often)

What do I do? I try to play with people who can see better than I.
Which could put us in a lot of trouble this weekend, Dave. I think we're
playing together for at least one round. Hope SOMEONE in the four can see.
:-)}
I can usually see the ball for the first hundred yards, so I can get a
pretty good idea where it's going. Another trick; playing in late twilight,
so you learn to judge direction by feel. (I don't do this by plan, but
sometimes it happens anyway. :-)
BTW, I do make sure to bring a cap; only forgot that once in the last 2 years.
Cheers!

All clubs with the exception of the putter are sporting Golf Pride Crown
grips. I carry two 9 irons due to the fact that I can't stand my cast PW
for anything but a full swing, and the cast heads are "strong lofted", so
they carry about a club to a club and a half farther than my forged irons.
The insertion of the second 9 iron closes the gap, and all is right with
the world. By the way, I only have about a dozen Crown grips in my
possesion. If ANYONE ANYWHERE has a lead on finding more, PLEEEAAAASSEE
let me know.
That's 15 clubs by my count. Add 4 penalty strokes to your handicap:-)

Chinese currency names are fen, chiao, and yuan (100 fen = 1 chiao and 10
chiao = 1 yuan, I think). Never seen one though.

I wear contact leanses for golf. I don't like to bother with them every
day (unless I happen to be playing golf every day :-) ), but for golf I
don't find they are too much of a pain.
After wearing contacts, I find playing in glasses (besides the dripping
sweat problem) difficult because of the different depth perception (real
or perceived - I don't know).
Dave T's solution (playing with people who can see) reminds me of that old
joke where the fourth of a regular foursome - the one who can see - dies,
and the pro lines them up with another guy who has great eyes, but no
memory - so he sees the ball, but then can't remember where it went!

The Velvet Wraps are really nice grips. I've just recently
switched over from Tour Wraps, which have always been
reliable (except when it's really wet!). The Penick grips are
nice and tacky, but lack a little bit on softness. They're a nice
cosmetic touch for the clubs but I may switch to the velvet
wraps before long.
I made everthing except the Hogan and Wilson (obviously).
The Penicks are really nice feeling clubs, better (IMHO) than
the DCI's or the new Ping ISI's (which I recently did some
comparison hitting against). I would rate them equal with
Zing 2s. I'm thinking about making a new driver with a
titanium face insert and ultra-lightweight graphite shaft to get
more distance. I'd be curious if anybody has any opinions
on this combination.

Sure, me too. "Clank," yeah, felt like a weak s***k, should be
dead right about 30 yards; "clank," uh huh, felt like a pulled s***k,
should be right, about 30 yards, and so on;-)
Oh, about the "real" thread. Replaced Ping Eye 2s with a home-
made set of Z Mod 2s--TTGold+ S300 5i 38 1/4", 2 deg uprite, and at the
time 5i swing speed was about 78. Screwed around with swing-wts till I
quasi-MOI matched them and haven't looked back since. I have some assorted
"metals" and the be thing (IMHO) to say to aspiring club-makers is "it
may not be the arrow" If you arn't improving stop building clubs, at
least after the third one;-)
I have some "duck" tape wrapped on a golf pencil which comes in
handy to check on where the ball is making contact, and some band-aids.

I dunno, I think it's more interesting to find out what is in someone's
bag BESIDES their clubs...
Me?...
Oh....
1. Dead grass clippings stuck to half-eaten Snickers bar
2. Several greasy golf gloves that will get a hole in them any day now
3. Loose tees that keep poking my fingers when I reach in there
4. Variety of balls for all conditions; balatas with smileys cut into
them and hard cover balls with big cart path abrasions on them. All
found; none bought with my own money except for the rare ones I used in
tourneys.
5. Overpriced plastic doodad with elastic that keeps clubs dry in rain;
really works but no bargain considering it is only a big baggie with panty
elastic on both ends
6. Dry scorecards that were once wet
7. '96 rule book that has been repeatedly wet; pages stuck together
8. Divot fixer from Walt Disney world that has Mickey engraved on it
Ok, who's next?

Balls, tees, clubs, etc. were mentioned previously.
Ten round ticket from the par-3 ten minutes from the office.
2.00 off range bucket coupons--about three sheets of 'em (one expired)
Impact tape (recorders) left over from my lesson Saturday.
Free round coupon for a resort in the Poconos (picked up at a golf show
this winter--I keep all golf items with such value in the same place)
Ball markers which came with my ball mark tool
(they give you a 20-year supply)
Spare spike (found it one day)
Empty water bottle
Empty beer can in insulating jacket (considering the SOBs who held up
the whole [blasphemy] course Sunday, I wished it was something stronger)
House keys
Receipt for Saturday's lesson
$5.00 off greens fee at Ashbourne
Half off greens fee at Skippack
Club brush
88c in change
Six greens fee receipts
Two pencils
and in the bottom of the big pocket... my sunglasses.
A tip for those of you who read this far!--Went to the range today and
worked out all the bad karma from Sunday's round. Saturday's lesson (first
since winter) identified the cause of my slice (woods only, straight 150
yards then a _sharp_ right): a strong left hand causing my clubface to open
at impact. On further consideration, I concluded that being a natural
left-hander playing golf righty (see other thread) was part of the cause,
my years as a cricketer another part (the basic forward batting stroke has
the left hand well out in front of the ball)
So, the pro had me swing the club like a baseball bat a few times to get a
feel for opening and closing my clubface. In the baseball swing, think of
rotating the bat as you hit the ball. I then made up a drill where I first
roll my right hand through the ball to try to hit a hook, then balance my
hands and hit straight.
The same kind of advice could apply in reverse if you are prone to smother
hooks or to low balls which start out left.
Used to hit Staff tour grinds, but got tired of hitting that gnat sized
sweet spot!

Yes, but does it make any difference if you are wearing the
sunglasses?? :-)
