My wife and I have to decide to take a vacation in the Monterey, California
area this year. I'm planning on playing Pebble Beach and plan on staying
at least one night at The Lodge at Pebble Beach. I'm looking for other
places to stay in the general area. My wife is looking for a really nice
hotel or bed and breakfast that is hopefully right on the ocean. One place
that we are looking at is The Seven Gables Inn. Has anyone stayed there or
the Inn that is next to it? My wife would also like to do some horse riding
if anyone knows of a place for that. We will probably be going in May.
Any recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know how many rounds of golf I'll be playing, but I'm sure I won't
get to play all of the courses that I would like to. I would appreciate
comments or rankings on the following courses:

Pebble Beach
Spyglass Hill
The Links At Spanish Bay
Poppy Hills
Pasatiempo
Others?

You may want to look into the Inn at Spanish Bay. Prices are a little
more reasonable than the Lodge, and you get the same deal on golf. It's
not as close to the action, but the bagpiper who plays at sunset every
night is a real nice touch.

My sister goes and stays at the Seven Gables Inn once a year. Her and
her husband love it.

My handy dandy AAA travel book has the Pacific Grove Inn (408)375-2825,
Quality Inn (408)646-8885, Rosedale Inn (408)655-1000 and Pacific Garden
Inn (408)646-9414 all in Pacific Grove and all earning 3 stars. I don't
believe anyone of them is on the beach, but they would be within a
few blocks of it.

In Carmel, actually Carmel Highlands, there is Tickle Pink Inn
(408)624-1244. It's right on the water. I've never stayed there, but
I have heard good things about it. I've also heard La Playa Hotel in
Carmel (408)624-7966 is also very romantic. Carmel might be a good place
to stay, because it gives your wife plenty to do while your out golfing.

The only places I've ever stayed in Monterey is the Doubletree (800)222-TREE
and Marriott (408)649-4234. I stayed at these on business because they are
attached to the Convention Center. Both are a block or two away from the
Wharf and Maritime museum.

If you want golf with your stay, there is Quail Lodge (800)538-9516 which
gets you golf at Quail Lodge Golf Course and Hyatt Regency (408)372-1234
which is attached to Old Del Monte Golf Course, or Carmel Valley Ranch
Resort (408)625-9500 attached to Carmel Valley Golf Club, a Mickey Mouse
Pete Dye design.

I don't know anything about them, but I know there are stables and trails
in Pebble Beach. When you call the Lodge or Inn, ask them about them.

If money is no object, (and you have no in for private courses,) I'd rank
them:

Pebble Beach (Pebble Beach)
Pasatiempo (Santa Cruz)
The Links At Spanish Bay (Pebble Beach)
Spyglass Hill (Pebble Beach)
Quail Lodge (Carmel Valley)
Poppy Hills (Pebble Beach)
Bayonet (Ft. Ord)
Back-9 at Pacific Grove Muni (Pacific Grove)
De LaVeaga (Santa Cruz)
Laguna Seca (Laguna Seca)
Rancho Canada (West) (Carmel Valley)
Old Del Monte (Monterey)
Aptos Seascape (Aptos)
Pajaro (Pajaro)
Rancho Canada (East) (Carmel Valley)
Carmel Valley (Carmel Valley)
Black Horse (Ft. Ord)
Spring Hills (Watsonville)

I've heard good things about the Golf course at the Presidio. I believe
it's only a Par-68, but a fun little course. I haven't played there, but
they do now allow public play.

Mark,

After you have had your fun golfing treat you and your wife to the
following.

One night stay at the Monterey Beach Hotel. Great views, you can walk
downtown, go to the world famous aquarium....A great day!

Then, drive down to Carmel. There are lots of little B&B's there, my wife
and I stayed at the Babbling Brook Inn (Sp?) and each room has a decor
theme, we stayed in the Laura Ashley room (My wife thought that was very
cool!) There are a couple of courses in that area as well if you wanted
to sneak a quick nine in before lunch.

Hope this helps!

George
